I have read several times on here that people used the paper towel method to smooth their cakes. I have never heard of that, was is it?

I use Viva paper towels every time! You apply your BC icing and let it sit long enough to crust - mine just takes a few minutes. Then I lay a paper towel over each section and either use my hand or the fondant smoother and just kind of iron it out. If the icing has crusted the towel won't stick to it and you can lift the towel, see where you still need to rub more. Keep doing that until you have a perfectly smooth cake.

Hi vpaz24,

After your cake has crusted, take the paper towel and place on cake and smoothout with hand.

You can use the towels that have designs on them that will transfer to the cake and give it a nice background.

An important thing to remember too, is don't let it crust tooo much.... just let it set for a few minutes (3-5) then smooth it. (if it is still slightly sticky - try it again in just a minute or two) If you let it set too much, it will make cracks in the icing.

I just learned that trick from the people here and it works GREAT!

The Viva is so smooth and it's easy to feel through where there are any thick places that need to be smoothed out. The first time I tried it I couldn't believe it was actually MY cake when I was done. It looks very professional!
