This might sound gross to a lot of you, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a frosting recipe that uses soda to flavor the frosting? I have a friend who is a Mt. Dew addict, and I thought it would be fun to make a Mt. Dew cake for her! icon_smile.gif Any ideas?

I know on the internet there are a number of soda-flavored/based cakes which use soda pop in them. But that's the cake, not the icing. Personally I've never heard of pop used in icing, but then I've been wrong before...icon_confused.gif My guess, try an internet search or search the recipes forums here.

I have a recipe for cake using soda, but I thought flavoring the frosting with it too would be fun, since the cake will be a VERY mild soda flavor. I've been searching the internet, but haven't found anything yet, and was hoping that one of the experts here would have an idea for me. icon_smile.gif I'm still searching, if I don't find anything I'll improvise. icon_smile.gif I wonder if you could boil down the soda and use as a syrup to flavor a basic frosting?

You know what you could do, use the LorAnn (candy) oils which I know come in flavors like Champagne and Cola. You can try a few drops of those (a little goes a very long way!) and see if it is what you need.

As for boiling the soda into a simple syrup, try it and find out! And let us know! icon_lol.gif

I made a root beer cake once for my dad's birthday and just used the straight soda in the bc frosting in place of the other flavorings. It didn't seem to affect the consistency of the frosting, but the flavor was so subtle, you could barely taste it. That could have also been because it was chocolate frosting and the chocolate flavor overpowered the root beer. The soda also colored the frosting a bit, I didn't care at the time because, like I said, I made it chocolate, but that's something you would need to take into account using soda. It was really fun because no one could figure out what that new taste was!

When I make the soda cakes I flavor my buttercream (1/2 butter, 1/2 Crisco) with whatever type of cake I am making-Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc. I just use the soda instead of milk or water and gives it a nice flavor-ETA it helps if the soda is flat.

I make Dew cakes and Sunkist cakes all the time....Hubby wants a Dr Pepper one so thats next. I usually bake them in my cast iron BUNDT pan and then make a glaze out of confectioners sugar and the soda for the frosting. After that sets and is cooled, I decorate with a "spike" of fresh flowers and ribbon. I have a few customers that really like this as a "gift" cake. They prefer giving something like this versus a buttercream covered cake and I enjoy how easy it is..... plus I get to make BOWS, another passion. icon_biggrin.gif

I tried to boil down soda into a syrup to flavor my bc....didn't really get syrupy the way I expected, but all-in-all the flavor is pretty good. I think next time I'll do half butter/half shortening in my bc, because the butter flavor is a little overpowering. I added a little limeaid (didn't have lemon or lime extract on hand) and a couple drops of orange extract. I'll keep experimenting, but I think it's pretty good for a first attempt! icon_smile.gif

I use soda in cakes as others have. I've been afraid of using it in icing, only because it will change the color of your icing. Good luck, keep us posted on what you come up with.

Has anyone tried adding soda to a whipped cream icing? I have a bride who wants coke cupcakes, and we are tying to figure out a way to get the frosting she wants the most. I am alittle afraid to add it to such a light frosting though...

AI feel like that would vause it to seperate the whipped cream. But I've never done it.

Hamaranpuu, I don' t anything about whipped cream icing, but you could try using the concentrated cola syrup designed for use in soda streams, instead of straight cola.  That way the flavour will be much stronger for the volume of liquid added.
