Hi, Everyone--

I have an interview for an in-grocery bakery/deli counter job tomorrow. Do those of you who have--or who have had--this kind of job have any ideas as to what to expect? Will I be doing a demo of anything decorating-wise, or should I expect the typical "all-talk" interview?

Thank you for your help. icon_smile.gif

I briefly did some work in a high end store, as a decorator. I brought pictures of my work, and they asked me to do a demo for them. That was pretty much it! I'm sure they'll have questions... "how fast are you?" (they crank them out!), your techniques for icing (theirs may differ from yours), and what ideas can you bring to the table... ? Hope that helps!

I worked in a grocery store's bakery in high school and that is how I learned to decorate cakes. I would say every employer is different, just bring your pictures, and tell them everything you can offer. I am sure you will do great! Good luck!

Thank you, Stephanie. icon_smile.gif They have my photos already, minus my latest (Superbowl) cake, anyway.

I'll update tomorrow. icon_smile.gif

You will probably be asked to do a demo cake for them. Even though the bakery manager I worked for had seen me compete (and beat their best decorator!) I still had to do a demo cake for the owner. And yes, he was watching the clock. But don't let that make you nervous. Do what you do and know that *they* know you'll get faster when you've been in a production environment for a while.

Bring your portfolio, by all means! Speak up about any specialty techniques you do.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I got the job! There was no demo required during the interview. Thanks again for all of the advice and good wishes. icon_smile.gif

I had an offer for a bakery position and they wanted me to decorate a cake for them. They wouldn't tell me with what or what kind of decorations but since I am not that good at roses I was too nervous to try.

Good luck. If it is what you want I hope you get it. Please let us know!
