Welcome to cake central. there are answers to many questions in the existing threads. You can use the search button above.

Gumpaste and fondant can be made from a recipe or purchased ready to use. While technically both can be eaten, gumpaste dries fairly hard and fairly quickly

Fondant is used mostly for covering cakes, and it can be used for decorations and figures.

GP (gumpaste) is used for making flowers and decorations.

A mixtur of both, 50/50 is often used for figures and drapes. It dries hard but gives you a little more time to work it.

There are fondant recipes here in the recipe file, on baking911

the best gumpaste recipe can be found at nicholaslodge.com, along with instructions
