I have a cake order for Friday and my client would like a basketball cake. I have two things in mind. First I thought of making the 3D basketball using the ball pan but I'm not sure if that cake would serve more than 12 people.

Then I thought about a sheet cake with a basketball hitting the backboard and the basketball hoop piped around the ball.

What do you think? Does anyone have any pictures that they could share or instructions for the ideas listed above?

I've seen a sheet cake cut out like a backboard with the basketball on it with the net like you explained. I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

Thanks for listing the websites Mchelle. Do you know of any other sites with pictures of cakes using the ball pan. I would really like to use it. I bought it on ebay over a year ago and never use it.

Check these out. The adduses link gives additional uses for the sportsball pan. I can't seem to find the backboard cake w/ball. I'll look again later.

I love that one! I wonder how that shaped the bottom cake. Do I shave some of the cake off to give the same affect?

I would say just trim it that way. Also, the ring around the top will give it more of an angle visually.

Any time! I'd love to do this full time!

The Gap cake is pretty cool! If I were making it I would stack cake slices for the height and then ice it and use chocolate for the sides so they would stand up above the top of the cake. You could use fondant too but I would think you would have to prop it up with something around the top until it would hold it's shape.

Melt the chocolate or chocolate coating and pour it into a cookie pan or onto parchment paper. after it has set use a warmed knife to cut it to size and shape. you can pipe melted chocolate to "glue" it together at the corners or just stand it up before the icing sets and that can hold it into place. You can also pipe the letters in chocolate or cut them with warmed letter cutters.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for showing the other cakes. I sent my client a picture of the first cake the Debbie showed me from "the perfectcake website" and she loved it. So this is the one I'm going to do for her.

I have one other question. I've never done a cake project this big so am I undercharging if I price the cake at $45?

I think you are under charging. You are making two cakes, plus all the time in sculpting and decorating. I would charge $60.
