icon_biggrin.gif I am doing my first cake show competition. I wanted to get some tips, pointers, any good advice at all. It can even be what not to do. I am having difficutly in deciding to do buttercream icing or fondant. I will be using cake dummies since the entries will be on display for a week. Any suggestions?

Teisha...how exciting! I've never competed so I don't have any first-hand tips but here's an article Earlene wrote...

And also one by Diane on covering your cake boards with hints for show-work entries.

Good luck!

How exciting!

I'm not sure if this is the same Earlene article that Lisa linked you to, but Earlene has a big section on her website about cake competition and what the judges look for.

Good luck!

Would you use a buttercream or fondant for a cake competition display. I am concerned about the buttercream cracking.

I've watched a lot of the competitions on TV. Seems like 99% of the cakes that have to be displayed that way are done in fondant. I would think a fondant covered cake would hold-up better than a BC one. I don't know what a BC cake would look like after being left out, uncovered for a week. I think it would dry-up, maybe crack.

How exciting for you! You will be posting what you enter, or can you do that once the show is over? And is there a theme which you have to follow, or just make what ever you would like to? I'd be a nervous wreck but it would be fun!!! Wishing you the best!
