I need to make 2 cakes for my kids birthday party next Saturday. I know short notice. This is the second time I am making a 3d cake and have no clue as to where to start. I have never taken any classes but kind of winged it all and so far no real flops. Any help would be so appreciated in getting them to look right.

I havn't made the castle yet, but I have made the treasure chest. I just used a loaf pan and let it dome up. Then cut off the dome and used it as the lid. I iced the lid and propped it over the candy in the chest.

Good luck!

Little tip: don't ice the back third of the bottom or the top as the lid may slide backwards. That's what started to happen on my pirate cake. The candy will cover it so don't worry about that. You could also use candy sticks like dowels to hold the lid in place as well.

one more thought on pirate chest:

might be wise to also prop the front of the lid up using a tootsie roll or similar...just to be sure

(now of course if you stuff if full of candy may not need to)

Here is my version of the treasure chest.... this was one of the very first cakes I did a few years ago. If I were to do it again I would lose the borders and put bands of fondant on the chest. I used a candy necklace, ring pop, and a few other candies for the treasure. I couldn't find chocolate coins anywhere at the time, LOL. The pirate logo is a chocolate transfer.

I can't remember how I did the lid but it traveled for an hour and it did move a little so be sure and make it sturdy. : )

I have never done a castle cake so can't help there.

Here's a castle cake that i did for my niece for the 2nd birthday last year. It's pretty simple, but the turrets and steples have to be premade and allowed to dry. I simply wraped the fondant around a cardboard cilinder covered in cling wrap. To make this simpler you could use icecream cones covered in icing for the steeples.
I made the princess in gumpaste.
Hope this helps

Oh I found chocolate coins in Walmart for 0.50 at Christmas time and didn't think to buy any now I am finding them for $40 for 250 coins. LOL seee what happens when you do not think

I think I am going to mix the two diffrent castles and see what I end up with. Looking at them in pics they look so hard to do but once broken down thank you Doug it really makes sense.

translation of chest instructions (reading clockwise from lower left)

1. note flat edge cut on lid; hide w/ icing

2. bend cake board for lid (to shape drawn)

3. dowel (suggest two or three along back edge of lid to secure it to cake

4. edge built up similar to castle

5. cake stacked like castle

and in case you need the castle:

1. bake 2 9x13 sheet cakes

2. cut each to a 9x9 and two 9x2 strips

3. stack and torte 9x9s

4. add strips to build up parapets

5. cut 1x1 sections from strips to make the fancy edge (save cut out blocks for cake balls!)

-------------

for towers:

1) bake 9x13 sheet cake

2. using biscut cutters or similar (2" or 3" diamater) cut out circles of cake

3. stack with icing as "mortor"

4. add dowel down center

5. top w/ ice cream cone

Not sure if you have seen it but Boween on this site has an AMAZING treasure chest cake posted.
She made the lid out of Rice Krispie treats!!!
I have a part to go to this Friday night and I'm going to attempt to make something similar.

I made a treasure chest last summer for a friend.... if you look in my pics, you will see the finished product and also the bottom separated from the top so you can see the doweling. All instructions are included with my pics.

Good luck!!!
