Cake For 50Th Anniversary

My grandparents 50th anniversary is comming up on the 1st of may, and my mother wants to throw them a surprise party, and, well, I want to make them a cake. Now I'm not quite sure what type of cake. I like cakes with many tiers, and I'd also like to decorate it using gold leaf (seeing as how the 50th is the golden anniversary).

But other than that, I have no ideas. help me out?

I don't mean to sound rude, and thank you for the suggestions, but I really hate wilton.

Do you know of anywhere I can buy gold leaf or gold dust for cheap? I kinda looked at luster dust or whatever it's called, but it's not really ment to be eaten...

If they had a wedding cake originally, why not try to copy it but with the 50 instead of original topper-I did that for a 25th-their daughter had a picture of their cake and I copied it as well as I could considering the picture-but they were surprised anyway and it turned out well! If no way to do the wedding cake, why not a transfer or edible image of them 50 years ago and one of now -something along that line>

You can eat luster dusts. They don't have a taste. I think the only one which causes any concern is silver.

I think I've kinda got an idea of what I'm going to make, I'm going to make. I'm thinking like a two tiered cake, with the tears each only being an inch to an inch and a half tall. in a rich, moist chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream or chocolate ganache, and then gold flakes on it, and a gold ribbon arround each of teh tiers.

But I aslo saw another cake I really liked... whicj has gold fleur-de-lis on it, on an ivory backgroung.

these plans aren't set in stone, I'm still open to all of your suggestions.

I am sure you can find or figure out an idea for this cake. Whether you like wilton or not, I am sure you can come up with something by looking at different cakes (wilton and not) and pull out some wonderful ideas to make this cake spectacular. Maybe if you go into a store that sells cake decorating stuff and look at all the toppers, pick out one you really really like and design the cake around that. You could take a picture of the cake topper and post it then maybe we can give you some great ideas for the cake by looking at it. I think its a great thing that you want to do this....I dont have much family left, let alone some that are still married. So my heart and best wishes go to you for wanting to do this! You go girl!

What I'm thinking of is kinda similar to this:

except with another tier, and the icing will be glossy (which brings me to another point, anyone have a very rich, glossy, chocolate frosting recipe? I kinda wanna cover it with fondant or something rolled, just to get the smooth finish, but I also want it glossy, so fondant is really out of teh question. I guess ganache is my best bet) and I plan on having bigger flecks of gold, and have them flattened. I made a little picture to kinda explain how I want it.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make a little gold ribbon? I'm thinking fondant covered with gold leaf, but I dunno.

Open to your suggestions.

That sounds beautiful and yummy. Yes, ganache might be your best bet for smooth and shiny; if you were to use chocolate buttercream you could add clear piping gel to it to make it shiny.

these are some others I saw that I kinda liked: I think this would be kinda cool if I did it topsy turvey A bit too over teh top for me, but maybe if I removed some of teh fru fru... and made it topsy turvy

And I also saw some others, but cant remember where the pictures were, but they had like a kinda grecian design stenciled on them in gold.

So I really don't know what I want to do.

Don't know how you could make piping gel, but I know you can buy for a reasonable price for a large container for it.

I haven't had any trouble with luster dust and yes, it is edible and meant to be eaten as it's for cake decorating and chocolate decorating. I'd use a real ribbon ironed to wax paper to make it moisture resistant.

w00t!!! It's back on.... but on the 7th, but I'm going back home to NB on the 2nd, so teh cake will have to be frozen. Are my plans still ok you think?
