I ALWAYS use the cake mix extender recipe from here with my yellow cakes. I would like to use it for my Devil's Food as well, but do I need to also add some Cocoa powder? How much?

THANKS!

When I "doctor" my Devils Food mixes, I add 3 tablespoons cocoa powder. This is the only way I like chocolate cake!

I'm having the hardest time with this. I've tried the cake mix extender recipe with Devil's Food mix, replacing the 1 C. flour with 2/3 flour 1/3 cocoa. I've done it 4 times and each time ended up a burnt mess on the bottom of my oven? What in the world am I doing wrong?

I can't imagine what could be going wrong. Are you using the recipe exactly as I have it listed? You have to ignore what's on the back of the cake box. Is your oven on 325 F ? Are you filling the pans no more than half full? I've used this mostly with the butter fudge mix but I have used it at least 3-4 times with the devils food mix and it was great EVERY time. As a matter of fact, I'm headed to the kitchen now to make one for a birthday.

Hope you get it resolved because it is a great cake.

When I make chocolate cake, I use the Darn Good Chocolate cake recipe...it is the BEST!! And not that different from the extender.

Ok, I tried the Cake extender on here for chocolate fudge cake, but I made some substitutions and YUM!!!!!

1 Cake Mix Box (I used Chocolate Fudge Cake)
1 cup All purpose flour
1 cup white granulated sugar
1 generous dash of salt

3 large eggs
1/3 cup milk
1/4 milk
1 cup Sour Cream (8 oz.)
1 cup melted butter
1 Tablespoon of Vanilla If making a white cake, use clear vanilla so cake will not discolor

** If making a chocolate cake:
1 box pudding mix (I used chocolate fudge pudding, too)

For this recipe you are only going to use the actual cake mix powder, do NOT also add the ingredients from directions on the cake mix box. Just ignore any other ingredients or directions listed on the cake mix packaging.

Preheat Oven to 330°
1. Mix flour, sugar, cake mix, **pudding, and salt together with fork, set aside.

2. Into Mixer bowl put eggs, milk, sour cream, butter, and vanilla.

3. Add dry ingredients and mix well on (about 2 minutes on low speed).

4. Bake at 330° for 65 minutes for 9 in. cake pan.
