I am just starting out and really struggling with setting prices!

This is a 9" square cake - all homemade, cake, BC icing and fondant

I took my Wilton classes at a cake shop -- she told us the shop charges $50 for that cake.

IMHO, the customer doesn't care what your costs are for fondant. You have to see what the market is in your area, as well as the level of skill put into the cake and the number of servings.

Where you really start to care about your costs is when you are doing this is a business. If you can't get prices that are higher than the costs as well as the cost ofyour time, then it won't be worth it.

that said, in my area, I charge $50 for a basic torted buttercream 9x13 sheet cake with a border and writing. Adding fondant and substantial decorations means I likely double that (depends on the decorations)

I'd say 40.00...I am in business also and just starting out...dont undersell yourself...but you cant run customers away either....especially if youre in a small town like me....but I find the more people see my cakes, the more they are willing to pay for extra detail work...every cake I made this weekend, i got a 10.00 tip for...wooooohoo me!!

$45.00
Nice Work!!! It doesn't matter if you're just starting out. Charge for the cake not your experience.
