I have a bridal shower that I am getting ready for the is next weekend and I would like to make some heart shaped cookies for it.
How far in advance can I bake and decorate the cookies and have them still taste good?

ya know m0use. I made cookies for our squadrons childrens christmas party and I made the cookies 2-3 days in advance, put them in an airtight container and decorated them the night before and the day of, they were fine...in fact people loved them...... I am sure you will do absolutely fine!
Are you talking this very weekend or Easter weekend? If you make them now they will be just fine for this weekend but I would wait until near the middle of next week to make for Easter weekend. Store them in an air tight container if you want to make them now and decorate closer to the date.
Mine keep in cello or poly bags for 2 weeks. I've even eaten them after a month and they taste fresh. (although I wouldn't sell month-old cookies!)

I'm bringing this topic back up again in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.
I use the no-fail sugar cookie recipe with Toba Garrett's glace icing (with milk) and need the cookies for a ceremony on Nov. 28th. What would be the earliest I could bake and decorate them? I will be putting them in cellophane bags with ribbon and then storing them in an air-tight container.
Hi Kos...I recently did some baseball cookies that I wrapped the same way. I baked the cookies 2 days ahead of time and decorated them so they would have 2 days to dry. If you have sevreal dozen to bake I think I would start at least 3 days ahead of time. This is the cookie icing that I used...it dried hard and was easy for putting in the bags.
3 egg whites
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
Beat on high for 7 minutes. You can thin down with a little water for frosting the cookies.
I don't know why I figured there was a secret tip that you could bake the cookies a week or more ahead of time without having to freeze.
I would think if you wanted to freeze them...you would be fine to go ahead and bake them. I have frozen cookies before and decorated after they thawed for a while and they were just fine.

I do wonder myself. I tried making the cookies and freezing them UNDECORATED wrapped well in parchment and then ziplock bag for at least a week early then took them out one evening to decorate the next morning. They were fine. I don't think I would ice them to early. I would think it would start to break the cookie down. How many are you having to do?
vitade - I only have a couple dozen to make. (I know... sounds like a handful compared to the hundreds decorators do on this site) but I have a lot of things going on during the same time and I'm nervous about the cookies since it's for a ceremony (public showing...my first). I'd like to get them out of the way. I seem to recall as a kid, (a long time ago)we made Christmas cookies, including gingerbread--frosted, weeks before Christmas. I wonder if they tasted good?
