Evening,

I have a bride who would like her buttercream icing to look like the icing on this cake. She wants the cake white, however the design on the cake is completely different. I simply have no idea how to make the icing looked crystalized like this and I cannot locate a tutorial, etc., to learn how (probably because I am calling the technique by the incorrect name).

Thank you so much for the help in advance!

Tracey

Its covered in crystal sugar.  SUPER easy.  I've made a LOT of them!

I made this exact cake 2 years ago and it couldn't be easier.  Cover your tiers with the buttercream of your choice and cover with coarse sugar,  just take handfuls of sugar and gently press the sugar on the sides and tops of your tiers- I used the Wilton brand and it worked great.  I used Swiss buttercream but I would guess that if you use a crusting buttercream you would have to apply the sugar soon after you frost to make sure it sticks.

I added the sugar before stacking and refrigerated the tiers to firm them up.  You can do touch ups after everything is stacked by adding more sugar.

If I am correct this cake was made by Jennifer Dontz- she is amazing!
