Candy Melts Or Fondant Dilemma - Flavor Vs Ease Of Use

AI'm making a frozen ice castle cake for my daughter's birthday and was going to cover it with shards of blue candy melts cut out to shape. My local shop has gefen wonder melts so I bought some and had a go and they taste vile but were pretty easy to use. Are all candy melts this bad? I've not tried any others.
My thinking behind candy melts was that they would be tastier for the kids to eat than shards of fondant/tylose. I don't like the taste of fondant (renshaw) but I don't like sugary sweet stuff anyway so I'm not a good judge of this.
Should I stick to my original plan? If I use fondant how much tylose should I add? How do I stick them to a buttercream cake?
Please help me make a decision.
I've used Wilton and a brand I've picked up at Walmart, but the name escapes me. They tasted kind of like vanilla. Not really great, but not vile, either.
