For those of you that haven’t heard of “steampunk” yet, or aren’t sure what it’s all about.. here is some info:

“You may have never heard the term “steampunk”, but chances are, you’ve seen it.
It’s when the styles of the past collide with gadgetry of the future. In films like “Golden Compass” and the “Hellboy” franchise..”
“Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction and speculative fiction, frequently featuring elements of fantasy, that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used — usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England  — but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date.”"

  1. I agree with many of the previous posts about getting out of your comfort zone. I also wasn’t too sure about this challenge when I first saw it, but as cake artists (or humans in general) you can either stay with the ‘same old, same old’ and not grow – or you can take a walk outside of your box and experience different things in life (o: I’m really looking forward to seeing all the entries for this one (o:

  2. When I first saw this contest, I was thinking “what on earth?!, they really missed the boat on this one”. Now that I have been made aware of the subject here on CC, I have been looking around on the internet for examples and information and I have to say I’m very intrigued. I’m glad I decided to be open minded about this and see it for it’s artform. Again, good luck to everyone!

  3. i checked out the entries and some of them are great! i’m a little intimidated to enter since there seems like a lot of professionals in the contest. i can’t wait to see more entries and what people come up with.

  4. I am counting about 30 cakes in the contest. What about the initial statement “There has been so much interest in this contest, more than we anticipated…”. Am I missing a few cakes?

  5. I think this is one of the most creative contest ideas you’ve ever had. It did make me think of the Wild, Wild West, like bea30 said, and even more of the old TV series on which that movie was based (most of you are too young to remember, yea, yea, yea…). If I weren’t out of town, I’d be in my kitchen fitting gumpaste gears together and using up all my metallic dusts on one of my own!!! Can’t wait to see all the entries!

  6. wow, some of the entries that went up today are incrediable! gonna be a great contest can’t wait to see who wins!!! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE

  7. Ops, forgot to mention: my cake is “lemon-poppyseeds” with raspberry cream on the top and “Pina Colada” cake on the buttom. If it is possible to add to my comment – it would be super! I could not find the way to edit the cake description.

  8. Make sure to check out the additional pictures under “Captured in Time” (top row, page 2) where the artist used gelatin to achieve the looks of glass. Very clever and creative. What a talent! Amazing entry!

  9. To ErikaK
My understanding was: ONE entry, but 5 or 6 aditional pictures are allowed. BTW, it is not too late to add them now, if you want to show some extra details.
