Thanks to all wedding dress cake makers, especially divaricks, for inspiration on this one. Bodice has lacy design piped in RI. Yellow cake with strawberry BC filling. Iced with cream cheese icing. Fondant dress and flowers. I can never get my top edges smooth on round cakes...they always have a little bump. Any suggestions on that? I am a Critique Subgroup Member. All comments welcome.
I agree! Your's is totally unique. I love this design and you made it better! About the edges, I have (had?) the same problem. I am no expert, but I am desperately trying to get my cake edges straight too. But I have had better luck with using a bench scraper to smooth sides and spatula/viva towel on edges (take a while, but works). Sorry, not a subgroup member.
critique subgroup member: very pretty! I really like the brighter pink roses, it compliments the pale pink icing nicely! I would love to help you out on the edges, but I have yet to master that myself!!
Critique subgroup member: Beautiful Cake!!! I love the pearl and lace details to the bodice. The darker pink roses (perfect fabric effect) nicely complement the lighter pink background. I can't help you on the uneven top edge because I get it too! It mostly appears after I've smoothed and let the cake set for a while, so maybe it's the cake layers settling and the icing shifts? I’m not a big fan of ivory & white together, so I would have made the pearls white but that’s just a personal prefere...
Critique Subgroup Member: This is beautiful! I love the bodice and the roses! I agree the pearls could've been white, but they detract nothing from the beautiful cake! I get the hump too - if you smooth the top first, then work the sides down from top to bottom it helps a bit!
Critique subgroup member: What a pretty cake! Your ribbon roses seem so delicate! Not sure about the ivory bead border though - it is difficult to get piped beads perfect. I think I have done snails trail. As for BC , smoothing, edges etc....I went to fondant so can't help much there...... But it doesn't detract from the pretty design......
critique subgroup member: beautiful design- I love the bodice. As for the edges-yeah- I think it's the cake settling and it just happens. I have no idea how to fix that, except for maybe letting it settle for a few hours and then taking a slightly damp viva to it. If it's like that before it settles and you can still work with it, try going from the edges down while you are smoothing them, it works pretty well for me.
Beeeautiful! I think it's very lovely and perfect. I get the bump on the edges too, so I smooth again on the top and then down the sides. Seems to help.
Critique group member: amazing job on the draping of the dress and love the lace on the bodice. Great design and lovely touch with the flowers. Sorry - no critiques from me!
Critique Subgroup member: The dress is pretty, as are the flowers and the border. About the ridge of BC, I think you have to take your spatula and ever-so-lightly push it from the edge toward the center. I can see a little overlap in the V of the neckline that causes another little bump. It is a pretty cake.
Thank you all for the comments. I had a lot of fun making this cake. It was nice to finally have some time and not do a rush job. As for the ivory beads...that's regular vanilla. I just can't afford to use the more expensive clear stuff in free cakes. I'll keep working on that bump on the top. I did notice when the cake was cut that the bottom 1/2 of the cake had settled quite a bit.
This is a lovely cake! Beautifully done. Your dress and flowers are soo pretty. Actually I like the ivory border against the white dress. It separates the dress from the border, rather than loking like the bottom of the dress chasing around the cake. The roses at the base are a beautiful touch. Have you tried the Wilton clear vanilla? It's not expensive, and possibly you could afford to use it for the areas you want to keep more white. Just a suggestion. You did a great job here. I love it!
