This morning I was looking at fellow CCer's websites. I came across a site that has some misspelled words. It is obvious that this person is using their site to promote his/her cake business. I immediately began to send a pm to this member, but I stopped myself. He/she never solicited me or anyone else to spell check his or her site and I don't want to come off as though I'm nitpicking. Also, sometimes words lose their compassion via email and I don't want to say something that may appear to be callus. What would you suggest?

Did he/she post asking for opinions on or about the site? I know when I set my site up I had done so an people would tell me about spelling and grammar mistakes. Emails, & PM's are hard to read in the right manner, they never sound they way the person wants them too. If this person asked for opinions about the site than yes I would, if they didnt than maybe think about your wording and still let them know about it.

Hi Kylesmom, I don't know what I'd do in a case like that either, but it really can't be making a very good impression for the website to have misspelled words. (I know it turns me off to see that.)

You are so right about how it might be taken, but it is quite possible that someone nicely pointing out the mistakes would be appreciated. Maybe reading some of the posts this member has written would give you an idea how they would react. Janice

Hi paolacaracas ~ I just went to your site since you said you want any help from others with spelling, etc.
I totally cracked up laughing!! LOL Not at your site, but at me not realizing it wouldn't be in English!!!

As for giving help when not solicited . . . I think I would leave it alone.

Hello fellow CCers Smile

This predicament is a tough one. I know that if I had a business-based website, I would want it to look professional in every aspect. I would be grateful if someone were to let me know if they noticed any error(s). However, that whole “how do you say it” thing is really challenging. I’m at a loss for words here. Sad

I think I would stay out of it. This person didn't solicit your help so it might be taken completely the wrong way

How about you say something like.

---While I was browsing through your gallery of lovely cakes, I noticed that there are XX words that were inadvertantly mistyped. As a fellow business person I know that you are working diligently to create an informative and elegant website. With respect to our common interests, I wanted to let you know about these omissions. You will find the words I am talking about here......... and here......... Again your work is wonderful and I appreciate the opportunity to interact with you on CC
Sincerely, XXX

How's that? And I personally would want to know. Was it my site? Embarassed
Good luck, Julia

¡Ay, Mira, Paola! ¡Acabo de mirar su Web site! ¡Sus tortas son tan hermosas! ¡Incluso si usted tiene algunas palabras deletrearon mal, las tortas son tan bonitas que nadie notará siempre!

(Hey, Paola! I just looked at your website! Your cakes are so beautiful! Even if you do have some words spelled wrong, the cakes are so pretty that nobody will ever notice!)

This is a tough one! I personally wouldn't do it because I would be afraid she/he might take it the wrong way.

In any case, if you do decide to pm the person...double check the corrections too.

Good Luck with this. And from the bottom of my heart, it's so nice to see some people that genuinely care for the well being of other people's businesses! More power to you! Thumbs Up!

I am always one who thinks "if it were me, I'd want to know". I know not everyone would take it that way. I would, however, send them a pm--throwing in apologies thoughout if they didn't want the feedback--insisting that you only have the best intentions in mind, adding things like: please don't take this the wrong way, or be offended, etc.

that's just me, though. I understand other people feel like myob is much better if advice is not solicited.

Now for the real question: IS IT MY SITE??????????????????? CUZ I DO WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

This really is a tough one, but I would definitely say something. What's important is to remain tactful and explain that you want to help, not criticize. Its delicate but because your intentions are good I think you'll be okay.

My husband and I own a lobster import/export business. When our website first went up I sent out the link to all our friends. Within a day, one of my friends had emailed me with a word document showing all the errors plus corrections that needed to be made. WE did not ask them to view our website for errors, but, we were pleased to have this information because as someone said in a previous post, mispelled words and grammatical errors on your website can have a negative impact on you and your biz.

It would be such a blessing if the owner of the site I'm referring to did see this post and reply.
