Is there something I can put over a cake board covered in wrapping paper so that the grease doesnt seep throught the paper and stain? I'd appreciate any suggestions!! icon_rolleyes.gif

You can cover it with clear contact paper.

You need to make sure that there is a barrier between the cake & the contact paper (i.e. wax paper, parchment, a cake board the same size as the cake, etc.) because the contact paper isn't safe for direct food contact for prolonged periods.

If your WalMart still sells fabric, you can get clear vinyl on a large roll, sold by the yard for 0.97. It is sold on the rack with the "by the yard" vinyl table cloth material. It is what I used on almost all my boards.

I also have done this using clear contact paper. It's usually by the totes and kitchen supplies at Wal-mart

The manufacturers of contact paper have made stated their products are not food safe. If using be carefull to place your cake onto a food safe cake circle or board and then afix that to your contact covered board. thumbs_up.gif

I use clear cellophane wrap like for Easter baskets. Works good for me. Researched on web and says it is food safe.

I mean I used to use non approved aka unsafe products but I don't anymore. Here's my mental process on that.

I see the aftermath of a wonderful reception--caterers are cleaning up. A friend stops by early to give a ride home to one of the caterer helpers. The friend takes a seat for a few because she is ready to pop pregnant.

She sees the empty cake plate holding the remnants of the demolished cake--she takes a swipe of the icing that has gotten smooshed into the cake board...into the un safe paper...and eats it...

Or how about a Mom leaves her baby for three mintues to dance with her husband and 11 year old Susie watches the baby and takes a teensy taste of the icing off the cake plate and puts it in the baby's mouth...

Or 90 yr old Grandma can't really eat sweets, she just takes a little swipe of the icing...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
So for me I don't take that risk. I do not risk an iota of the health of any potential person or already born person. I err on the side of 'what if' big time for health reasons. Contracts not so much. Health yes me, uber careful.
I mean I used to use non approved aka unsafe paper products but I don't anymore. And that's my mental process.
Wilton makes pretty and food safe paper products. No worries.
That's what works for me.
I agree 100 percent with K8memphis- , I have a question, is the clear vinyl safe?
It might be, But if I ever ~God forbid~got investigated I want to, on purpose, be able to say every fricken thing I used is clearly unequivocally marked food safe.
Same here, and if you have a 40-50% off coupon it's even better.
I would definitely stay away from vinyl! It gives off toxic chemicals that are linked to liver damage as well as damage to the central nervous, respiratory and reproductive systems. Definitely not a foodsafe option.
(On a sidenote, there's an interesting movie from a few years back called "Blue Vinyl" where the film-maker follows the process of vinyl production. What she finds isn't very good.)
I used to personalize all of my cakes with wrapping paper, covered with clear celophane. I loved the look and it was foodsafe, you could wipe mistakes and drips, etc. I only stopped because it was time consuming. But, yes, the cellophone at Michael's is labeled "food safe" (or it used to be.) I've also used the basket wrap from Wal-Mart.
I cover foam board with wrapping paper, but I don't put the cake on it, I put he cake on a cardboard cakeboard, and I cut it so its just under the cake and not sticking out....I have no idea if thats ok......I will wait and see what the pro's say
Wilton makes "wrapping paper" for cake boards that is food safe and doesn't absorb the grease.
