I will never use 50 pounds of Sweetex! Does anyone know where it can be purchased online in smaller quantities? I'm coming up blank when I Google it, except for Global Sugar Art, who won't ship in the summer!

Leahs uses Alpine, according to one of her posts. I see other "store brands" of hi-ratio shortening, and available in smaller quantity. Anyone with any experience?

The Baker's Kitchen used to sell both Sweetex and Alpine in 3# or 50# quantities... But a quick check showed that they're now carrying their own (TBK) brand of hi-ratio in only the 4# size (and a zero transfat version):

Sorry I couldn't be of any assistance. icon_sad.gif

Jan, I phoned the Baker's Kitchen last week and spoke to a manager about the 4lb containers of Sweetex.

He told me that just 2 weeks ago they were notified by the makers of both Sweetex and Alpine that they could no longer use their product name on the smaller containers.

The Baker's Kitchen would repackage the hi-ratio into the 4lb containers and then place the Alpine/Sweetex label on it.

He told me that they were still repackaging the hi-ratio from Sweetex/Alpine but they had to put "The Baker's Kitchen" name on the label per the company's requests.

Was reading this thread and had to jump up and check my Sweetex.
I purchase from Bakers kitchen and it does have their label on it but it is still Sweetex.

That wedding bouquet at bakers kitchen is not the same stuff I get from the local lady. (fyi)

shopbakersnook dot com sells 1 lb packages but they are out of stock right now.
Is the WB from GSA the one you use Sugarshack?

Okay, just to make sure I have this right, I just purchase the smaller container of "hi ratio shortening" at the Baker's Kitchen and that will be Sweetex, right? How do I know which is Alpine and which is Sweetex? Thanks soo much for helping me with this icon_smile.gif

I would think the one that is NOT the zero trans fat would be the Sweetex. I just ordered some in the hopes that I'm right! Yesterday as I read their description, it said something to the effect that this is the real brand of shortening... hint - hint... and I was going to call them today to find out for sure, but someone has already done that for us.

I'm glad the OP asked these questions, and that we've found smaller tubs of Sweetex and the correct Wedding Bouquet!

It shouldn't be so hard to get these ingredients! We just wanna make icing!!

When I phoned the manager told me that this is the Sweetex brand that we are looking for.

I'm glad to know that their Wedding Bouquet is not the one that Sharon uses in her butter cream. I just tried it and I didn't care for the taste at all.

Off to order from global since the other place (fondant source) is out of stock.

Hooray! So we can get Sweetex in smaller quantity than 50 pounds! Thank goodness.

Thanks so much, dkelly and sugarshack, for pointing us to the right stuff.

I'm going to have some fun in the next few days. I've ordered my Agbay, 3 SugarEd DVDs plus recommended tools (I want them all), Sweetex, Wedding Bouquet and a few other cake toys. I guess my poor hubby will just have to eat the test cakes!

Hi Folks!

I had the same dilemma with TBK taking place of Sweetex. I actually called as well. I recvd. the same answer as others had. But something was really bothering me. How can a company (The Bakers Kitchen) repackage another companies (Sweetex) product with their (The Bakers Kitchen) own label on it?? Isn't that illegal as well. So.....I sent an email. This time I received a DIFFERENT answer. I was told that Sweetex is NOT inside the TBK 4 pound containers. The ingredients are the same, but they claim TBK is BETTER?????.... Really.....Better????

If any of you buy the TBK brand, can you please either PM me or reply to this thread on the results. I am very curious if there will be a change compared to Sweetex.

Thank you

I don't know about whether or not TBK=Sweetex, is better or not better etc., but the practice is definitely not illegal if that's how it's sold to retailers. I forget the precise terminology, but anyway a lot of mfr's specifically make bulk versions of their product meant to be privately-labeled by the retailer. So THAT part isn't strange at all.

But I too would always like to know peoples' opinions of some of these alternative products, since sometimes that's all I myself can find, so it's still a great question thumbs_up.gif.
