I'm hoping someone is online who can offer some advice. I have a cake to finish tonight for tomorrow morning. I thought I had read that cornstarch was preferable to icing sugar when rolling/smoothing fondant because you could just brush it off. The fondant was sticky so I put a bit on top so I could actually use my fondant smoother but now it won't all brush off. It looks like I have a snowfall effect on my nice smooth chocolate fondant. Actually it doesn't even look as nice as a snowfall effect, I just have white here and there and it doesn't go with my design at all!

Is there something I can do? I need to start the royal icing piping soon or I will be up all night. If anyone can offer a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks in advance!

Don't worry just rub some crisco or any vegetable shortening and that's it thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif . You can use a little pastry brush or a paper towel or just with your hands and rub the shortening all ovear the cake thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

also you could brush some everclear or lemon extract on it - whatever you use to paint with. It will dry quickly and remove the starch

A spritzer with clear alcohol in it works great. I wouldn't suggest lemon extract-it takes too long to dry. Also, painting it may leave streaks. A spritzer with a nice, diffused spritz works wonderful.

I wouldn't use the crisco method under the royal icing. They are not compatible!!!!

I didn't have problems with royal icing when I rubbed shortening under. I think that applies to the process of making the royal icing.

I have had royal turn to oozy foam when used with buttercream. I wonder if it's because of the amount used?
