A friend sent me this--I needed it after being told by a potential customer that my price for her Mom's 2 Tier, 70th, uber-special birthday cake to feed 100 guests was too high icon_sad.gif

I worked in a shop, unfortunately, this is how some people react when being told the price of the things they want to buy. icon_mad.gif
Glad I'm only baking for the fun of it, for family and friends.

I so hear you. I had someone tell me that $75 for my beer bottle cake was WAY too much! As my husband often asks..."what color is the sky in your world????"

Your beer bottle cake is fantastic!

So then I have to wonder what those people that thought it wasn't worth $75.00 do for a living???

How much is their time and expertise worth? Sheesh.

I think the next time a client wants cake for 250 people for under $100, I'm just going to flip open my laptop, set this to play, and leave the room.

These people needs to know their limit - bride wants cake for 150 people, delivery like 23 miles away - set up and I quote here 525. buttercream, with huge GP roses, she think it's too high.
I was going to call her to ask her what she wants to spend, hubby said don't, it is not worth it if you're not fetting paid for it.
Really, a lot of these people have 'champagne taste with kool-aid budget!'
My thing is know your limit, budget, and be realistic.
BTW --- I love that video

LOVE IT!

Yesterday I got asked to bake a sheet cake for $10. icon_confused.gif The woman was a highly paid VP of a large company. I guess its true, the more they make, the cheaper they are.

your sooo absolutely right !!!!! I did a flag cake for my husbands military promotion last year and everyone loved it. I get a call a couple months ago from the wife of a Colonel wanting the same cake for her husbands promotion....on short notice. I take the order and everything is great, even giving her the price...she said she would have the check ready for me.The very next day I get a call from her saying that they cant afford the cake with all the other arrangements they had going on and that they hadnt budgeted for it. She also decided to tell me that the people at the ceremony wouldnt appreciate the cake like they would anyway so she in turn asked if Id make a small round cake for just thier family at home because she still wanted to show her support for my husband and I (really meaning... my poor little "business"). Blah, blah, blah. Needless to say , I didnt do any cakes for her and will avoid future calls. The cake she wanted but was too cheap to pay for....Half sheet($100) w/a triple layer
5' on top ($15) hand cut american flag, to scale 13 stripes, 50 stars($25) one edible image w/ name, rank, congrats($10) and 2 gumpaste/edible image plaques ($icon_cool.gif All of this for the way over the top price of $158.00
The cake would have fed 65 people or more. We are an enlisted family and I thought we were cheap! I know exactly how much money they make, my husband worked for hers. How pathetic........... icon_rolleyes.gif

bennett5 - that cake is beautiful! Your time, effort and clearly the love put into it were well over $158. I just love when people try to "Support" me because they think they are in a better "social" position than me. Pbbbttttt! on them and their "Support". thumbs_up.gifusaribbon.gif

Wow--that flag cake is fantastic! I love the colors, the clean lines, the plaques...that seems like a very reasonable price for all of that talent.

She seriously screwed up by not having that amazing memento in her photos to remember her husband's promotion.

I love the flag cake, just wondering how you do that. Do you first roll out a sheet of white fondant and then add the stripes, your lines looks so nice, any instruction would be so wonderful, thanks

Thanks for all of the accolades girls!! Her husband is a truely nice guy and I felt sorry for him! The same day she ordered, he had called me as well to say how excited he was that I was making his cake. He was at my husbands promotion of course and saw the cake in person. I felt embarassed for him.Maybe its just his wife that is "cheap"....Anyway all I was wanting to say was that my husband attended his ceremony and his wife found another cake and it was a crappy grocery store cake...........
