Hi all I need help please I going to make a tool box cake with butter cream frosting . and hopefully wood grain 2x4 the question is how can I get the wood look ? may thinking so for tint the frosting a light tan than what?
thank you sammie
I just did one today. It's in my photos as a shoe box cake.
Take 1/2 white fondant, 1/2 colored fondant (I wanted maple wood so I did ivory and a tiny bit of copper). It'll be lighter than the finished product. Twist the two colors together but not so much that they blend all the way. I covered my cake board with it so I made markings like wooden boards then. Then I brushed a little bit of brown food coloring (mixed with clear vanilla) over it to get the effect I wanted. HTH
I might be difficult to get wood grain with buttercream. Perhaps you could base ice it in tan, then use a brown to pipe on the woodgrain? If you use crusting BC, you can smooth the two together w/ Viva after it crusts.
I found a stencil for wood grain at a hobby store. (Or make your own) Do a base color in buttercream. Let it crust then stencil on the wood grain in slightly darker color.
You can make wood grain on BC! It's easy! See my cake here:

I started with white BC..you could do a light brown. I drew in all the lines with a paint brush. I used a ruler to do the lines around the top. Once I had all the details on, I airbrushed it. I did a lighter coat first, then a darker coat. With the second coat, I paid close attention to the lines in the grain to highlight those.
HTH and if I can help more send me a PM or email!

I hate to sound stupid, but what section was it in?
Thanks!
I found it either at Menards or BenFranklin. Menards stencils are by the paint. Ben Franklin's the stencils were in a hobby isle with a bunch of other stencils.
