Hello fellow cake enthusiast! I am searching for a great butter cream recipe that is easy to smooth when frosting a cake but also tastes very good. I currently use the wilton recipe that is all shortening. It is great for icing the cake but I really don't like the taste. The icing that they use on the Food network cake challenge looks like it is easy to smooth and has to taste great. Does anyone have the perfect butter cream recipe??
I used Indydebi's recipe for the first time today. The family loved it! It was great for smoothing and for flowers!
The recipe is on this site:

I use a combo of Sugarshack's and Indydebi's recipes. I do use half-butter/half-shortening, though, instead of all shortening. Otherwise, just a mixture of these two.
Maybe Im wrong, but to me the icing they used at the Challenges look more like a non crusting buttercream. Maybe a Swiss or Italian..

A meringue buttercream - Swiss or Italian (SMBC/IMBC) - is hands down the best. They are incredibly smooth (and easy to smooth!) and just melt in your mouth. Once you try S/IMBC, any powdered sugar icing will taste grainy.
I also use a combination of indydebi's and sugarshack's recipe. I use indydebi's recipe with hiratio shortening and hot creamer mixture from sugarshack's recipe. Very creamy, taste great and easy to smooth.
