Does anyone use a plywood cake board, cut to the right size? And if so where do you get that done? I just went to Lowe's and they told me they can't do it.

If not, what do you recommend for a cake competition? I need an 18 inch round cake board.

I bought a jigsaw and buy big sheets of wood and cut it myself.

I have square ones cut all the time at my local lumberyard, but never round ones. I read long ago on CC that someone went to their local car stereo installation place and got them. They have them from cutting out holes in wooden boxes to install speakers and since they didn't need them for anything, they just give them away. Just a thought.

I have a very good friend and a father who owns a jigsaw....they cut the circles from big sheets of plywood for me.

You can cut it yourself, not really that hard, or many cake shops sell the masonite pre-cut boards. I think the shop in Indy has them.. Dang, I cannot remember the name.. darn senior moments... If you use plywood, be sure to use a food safe cake circle on top of it, if you are going to use it for a real cake anyway..

I just went in to my local lumber yard last week and requested 3/4" plywood...cut into 15x19 boards and 12" circles. They did a great job, and the cost was very reasonable. I used the 15x19 boards this past weekend...and loved them. I had tried foam core boards...1/2", doubled...and did not like those nearly as well as using the plywood.

I buy pre-cut masonite boards. Most cake supply shops/websites have them

Thank you all so much for responding. My husband might be able to cut it out. I will try to check some local lumber yards. And I called Ms. B's (in Indianapolis) and they do carry the masonite boards. I've never used a masonite board. Can you cover it with fondant or RI? And do you stack them on top of one another or just use one board?

I work at a Home Depot in the Chicago area and know that the associates in lumber will cut square and rectangle boards for you from plywood. However, they cannot cut anything round due to the placement of the saw--straight cuts only.

DH lets me use his power tools sometimes to cut my own. Sometimes I have him cut the odd shapes I want. Home Depot cut down to a certain size, but haven't asked them to cut circles or anything.

Lowe's will cut squares and rectangles(like Home Depot...straight cuts only)...get 2 cuts at no charge...after that it's ? cents for each additional cut.
DH cuts plywood and the plexiglass sheets for me.
