Have You Ever Done A Lemon Cascade On A Wedding Cake?

I just finished a tasting and the bride is using lemon and black as her colors. Lots of lemons in her reception kind of like this:

http://www.wedding-flowers-and-reception-ideas.com/lemon-centerpieces.html

She likes white cakes with black piping/ribbon/etc., but would like to possibly use lemons as decoration instead of flowers. The lemons don't have to cascade. I have googled and searched on CC, but am coming up empty on pictures that would be similar to what she has in mind. Have any of you ever done such a cake? If so would you suggest using real lemons or faux ones. I am not much for modeling fondant, but I will as a last resort. I thought the real ones may be too heavy to cascade. She is going with square stacked tiers of 14" 10" 6".

I've never done it but agree that they weight of the lemons would be a factor to be considered. Looking forward to hearing suggestions. The centerpiece pics in the link are very pretty and I can sure understand why she like this theme!

I have two suggestions. If you choose to model some lemons, use a mini or regular size marshmellow in the middle. That way, they won't be too heavy and you have something to "stab" if you want to adhere them to the cake with a skewer. I think incorporating lemons in a cascade other than their "natural" form..ie.slices or wedges would be pretty. If you used real lemon slices, couldn't you paint them with piping gel so they would be shiny? What about glitter? Just some ideas....

I have a few lemon/citrus-themed cakes saved in my favourites. (I only know a few of the bakers to credit them, my apologies!! icon_redface.gif )

Man - I swear I only walked away for a minute and look at all those beautiful cakes you posted, Antonia74! I think a couple of them are out of my league, but I'll definately run the others past the bride-to-be. She's such a sweet girl who likes anything. I have really started liking the look of citrus on wedding cakes. They're so fresh.

Boy there are some GORGEOUS cakes posted here!! I was thinking not of a lemon cake but rather one done in peaches with dogwood blossoms (do a search in the galleries under peaches) and maybe that would give you some ideas. Hope that helps some! icon_biggrin.gif

I started this thread a year ago, so the wedding has been since then. I was really looking forward to doing the lemon cake, but this is what she chose. Pretty, but not quite as striking and fresh as the lemons would've been.

Jammjenks, I looked in your photos a couple days ago to see if I could find it. So instead of going with something unusual she went with something so standard? Not that its not beautiful but I know you would have liked to have made the lemon cake. I like to switch things up a bit sometimes.. icon_sad.gif You should make a dummy cake with the lemon cascade! Put in your portfolio to show her what she missed! icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, I know. I wanted to do the lemons, but she decided against them. The dummy cake is a good idea! I'll have to keep it in mind.

Jammjenks, I didn't mean your cake was just standard because Jamie is right its gorgeous! icon_redface.gif I know it was a ton of work, probably more then putting a few lemons on it. Your corners are so straight too! It seems like every bride I meet just wants a ribbon around each tier and a monogram topper. Don't get me wrong.. those cakes are pretty easy to throw together just not exciting. icon_biggrin.gif

Ok.. my bride likes the 1st one that Antonia posted with the citrus slices on the edges and vertical lines!! She does not want all the slices though on the edges. What is the easiest way to do those lines?? Just pipe them with regular buttercream or royal icing??

That's a cake by Martha Stewart. I think she has the full instructions for it on her website under "Weddings". Check there for sure!

Jammjenks, your cake was great! I agree. If you ever have time, do a dummy cake of the lemon idea. (Sometimes the couples need to see it to order it! icon_lol.gif )

I have searched and cannot find it on Martha Stewart weddings. It looks like I could probably use the tip that you use for basketweave. The oranges are not real I'm sure.. or ar they?

I'd pipe those lines in bc using a round tip, #5 maybe??

And please don't think you offended me by those "simple cake" remarks. I agree 100%! I think she chose a pretty, classic, and simple cake. However...certainly not one that would stand out in a page full of cakes. Oh well, one day I'll do one with lemons and hopefully sell some of them.

Yeah, I looked for half an hour yesterday and couldn't find it either. I'm pretty sure I have the actual magazine though. If you want, PM your email address and I'll scan the info pages to you if I find something. thumbs_up.gif
