Hi,
Just wondered if any of you have used dowels under a fondant bow. This may sound like an unusual question but I am doing a 10" round shower cake this coming weekend. I've made a pretty chocolate fondant "package" bow (not the looped type). It's approx. 6" wide then another 3 or 4" for the bottom of the bow. What my concern is on a b/c iced cake is the weight of the bow going to be too heavy or should I put a few dowels under it to hold it up to keep it from sinking into the cake? Have any of you ever done that before?
Crazy question I know but it's a very important "client" with strong potential for future orders.
Thanks for any help CCer's!!
Have a great day.

I would put a plastic dowel or a couple of drinking straws in. I've done that before to support heavy decorations. Just make sure you warn the customer that there's a dowel/straw/whatever in there. |

Yes, I agree with everyone else! This weekend I had a cake with a soccer ball ontop. The ball was just styrofoam, so I didn't dowel. About 30 minutes afterwards, I turn around and there is the undoweled tier, severely slumping. I had to rebake the whole thing-when I took the fondant off, the cake had split in two.
So-better safe than sorry! |

You could place a few straws, too, instead of the wood.
