I am making my son a baseball themed 8 x 8 cake. I am making a small half baseball and a baseball diamond. I have an idea of how to make everything but the grass. i know the easy way is the grass tip but I don't have one and dont have the money to buy one. Is there any other way to make grass?? Also do I pull the frosting in different directions or just straight up letting it fall where it wants too? Oh and should I do grass on the sides too?
Please help, I really want grass. |

Do you have a leaf tip? If so use that. It will just look like bigger blades of grass.
Grass on the sides always makes a nice border.

I have a grass tip, and all it is is a series of I think #3 or so round holes, so I'd say you can use a round hole. I did the stuff laying flat, but that had to do with how the image was going on my cake, too. I'd bet if you used stiff icing, it would stand up fine--just don't try to make them all perfectly to the same height! |

You can also use any star tip for grass. I've used the 18 before & it turned out very cute~ |

what if you use shredded or flaked coconut and mix some green food coloring to it and you can make your grass that way. It's worked for me!  |

You can also use a slightly damp sponge and just sort of dab the frosting with the sponge right after you have applied it to the cake. It is sort of a stucco effect. You don't have to smooth the frosting when doing that. Works fine, I did that on a wedding cake a while back. |

I have used both a star tip and I have just spread frosting on and tapped it with a fork over and over to get it to peak, both of those have worked for me when my garbage disposal ate my grass tip. |

Don't you just"love" when that happens? Mine does this frequently. I have hubby in tip watch before he does dishes. |

LOL yes I will keep to myself how many tips I have lost to that beast. one tip came out in a hard pellet it had been beaten so many times LOL |
