I just colored some icing for an Elmo cake and had to send my dh for a 2nd container of the no taste red I have no other ideas than to just keep adding more gel until you get your desired color. |

You can try making it pink first then adding in a bunch of red...that sometimes helps. In the past when I have made red I have to use a lot. Icing tends to get darker as it sits so you can try and get it as dark as possible and let it sit a bit to see if it darkens up. |

It takes roughly 1 ounce "No Taste Red" per cup of BC. Some people start w/ a dark pink, as it's easier to get, then start adding red. (Red and black just take a lot of color.)
Another trick is to try to make only as much as you need, so you can work w/ a smaller amount. (Of course if you have extra, keep in mind that it freezes well. That way, if you only need a small amount later, you will already have it made.)

I swear by Americolor, but if you don't have those available to you, I was taught to go with ORANGE first and then start adding the red.
Good Luck!

Ooops! Make that 1/2 ounce--I just went and looked at my bottle. It takes about a whole small bottle, or 1/2 of the taller bottle. (Approximately) |

I have students who used strawberry jello powder to get flavour and color, another idea is kool aid (would help cut down sweetness as well). I always recommend cherry juice as the liquid to add color and flavour, then add the red. I have some students who add a little black to deepen the red as well. Other than that start by making a very deep pink, then start adding your red, either way it takes alot of WILTON red to get a deep red. |

A lady at a local cake shop gave me a great tip for red icing that I swear by. I use a combination of the Wilton no taste red and powdered red coloring. The powdered red also has no taste to it. I also try to make my red at least one day in advance so that it can sit over night and darken. The powdered color is use is called Candy-n-Cake powdered food color and is a CK product. |

I know this doesn't help you out now, but for next time, get some Americolor!! I only use Americolor for red and black. You can order it online. |

Thanks everyone! I know I might ask some obvious questions sometimes, but I'm pretty new to all this. I'm 17 and I really want to get into the cake decorating business, so for now I'm just trying to pick up all the little tips and tricks I can. |
