Can an edible image be placed on bettercreme? Would it look as good as if placed on buttercream?

Yes.. I have placed edible images on bettercreme several times. The images were fine.
I have used images that were printed for me at a cake place and commercally produced images.
I don't have pictures of them. Sorry.

Yes ive done some cakes that had edible image on buttercream. You just frost the cake and then place the image on top. If you buy your image it should come with pretty good instructions. Here is a pic of a cake with buttercream and an image.

Yes edible images will work on bettercreme cakes and buttercreme cakes. The only thing I suggest is not putting the edible image on the bEttercreme more than 24-36 hrs before it is going to get eaten. I noticed in the store I used to work in that it would fade after awhile on the bettercreme, it just doesn't hold the color well for some reason.
