I know this is terrible just to post, but I am so proud that I just had to. I made Debbie Brown's bee hive cake. It is my first carved cake and I am really happy with how it came out.
I didn't like that the cake was as dry as it was...but I am getting used to a new oven, so that might be part of it.
I had some problems with the "door" I made it too deep, then I played around with it too much, so it looks pretty bad.
The best part was that I made it to bring to a retirement party. My colleague is an apiologist - he's worked with bees his whole life, so it was appreciated.
Thanks for looking and for allowing me to share. |

Great job!!!
I've used the same idea of cake for my youngst daughter's 1st birthday. It was the second time in my life that I workd with rolled fondant (home made) and the first time ever that I carved a cake.
I should have stayed on a simpler model because I had to deal with too many new things at once.
Still, I am happy I did it.
This is such a beautiful cake for kids! |

Wow it looks great! The door doesn't look bad Being a little over critical are we?? :p
What kind of knife did ya use? I'm thinking a serated bread knife, but I know some folks use an electric knife! There'd be cake flying everywhere if I used one of those!!! |

Thank you all SO much.
It was fun to make and I was so happy that it all worked!
Yes, I used a serrated bread knife. It was a long knife, and I would have rather had a shorter one and would have felt like a had more control.
I was surprised at how "stiff" the cake was. I have covered 2 other cakes with fondant - they were box mixes and were very soft. This one was the Madeira cake recipe from the book. I found that after I carved it there were more rougher edges that I couldn't smooth out after it was covered with the fondant.
Next cake I'll know to pay closer attention to the details of the carving...I am going to attempt a Noah's ark cake for my son's first birthday!
Thank you all for looking and for your kind words! |
