I'm making a puppy cake this weekend, my first time making one. It's also my first time making a cake for someone other than family or friends. I really want to impress and am trying to think of a nice way to 'present' the puppy. Smile

Also, any tips anyone has on making those puppy cakes would be great. I have sue-dye's instructions and they're very well done. I really want to make a good impression with this cake. I'm charging $50, do you think it's too much? I opted to use a 10 inch cake pan instead of the 8. I baked one layer last night, used 8 cups of batter, and it's the nicest cake I've ever baked. It's didn't rise too much on the top and it's nice and high. I'll bake another one just like it tonight. How many does a 10 inch cake serve again?

Since it is puppy themed, you could cut your board to look like a dog bone. Very Happy That would be creative, yet simple.

It would be adorable to make the board into a puppy pillow with a bone and a couple dog toys made out of fondant, gumpaste or chocolate. Can't wait to see this pic. You are definately putting your heart and soul into this and watching every little detail! :wink

Ok, I get the smaller stuff. I actually have a doggie bone made already. What do you mean by the doggie pillow and how exactly could I do that?

I was thinking I'd make a cupcake cake to put in front of his nose with the 4 candles (age of the birthday boy). What do you think? The dog is going to be black and white and brown and I was going to cover the cake board... red come to mind? Think that would be nice? I also picked up some white ribbon with black paw prints on it. I would have trimmed the cake board with that, but it's a thinner cake board and the ribbon is too wide. Any other way I could implement that?

I have done a couple of puppy cakes - they are in my photos - i have one that is pink & one that is brown - feel free to use any of the ideas I did if you like them. As for the ribbon with the paw prints on it - maybe use that for the puppy's collar? Sounds cute - can't wait to see it in your pics!

how about grass and/or dirt? I don't know about others but our dog LOVES to roll around in the dirt and grass.... most especially right after he's come back from the groomers.

How about cut out paw prints trailing across the board?

I just did one tonight for my son's 2nd birthday! It was Blues Clues! It turned out pretty cute. It was also my first one. I used two wondermolds one slightly larger than the other and 2- 6" rounds. I think for the headache it caused me and the amount I smoked during my breaks I would charge more than $50! But I have never sold one before. Just made cakes for family so far! I think the dog bone shaped board would be cute. I also like the idea of the dog bed. You could cut you board in an oval shape and then do it like the puff bases to make it look like a dog bed! I made a dog bowl for my son and am putting coco puffs in it for dog food with a couple of dog bone shaped sugar cookies around it. Have fun and don't stress though, I would not try to make the icing smooth I would definitley use the grass tip or something for the hair. Trying to smooth the icing around all those curves was a @$#@$!

Can't wait to see it in your photos!

You can make a wood board and cover it in whatever wrapping paper design you like and then put clear contact paper over it. If you use a board that is just thick enough you can tack your ribbon on the edges too.

You can go with a plaid or something that looks like a mat or dog bed liner or grass for the design. Whatever you choose, I wish you luck!

Newspaper?

Or something to look like that absorbent stuff you line crates with..."Puppy Pads" I think they're called?

love all the ideas. I do love the idea of making a small round cake maybe 4" to look like a bowl of dog food with the cocoa puffs for dog food and your 4 candles in there.

Also, with your wider ribbon you could cover your board in red and then trim it on the top edge with your ribbon instead of on the side edge.

Love the blanket or rug idea. There is a photo of an incredible carved boxer dog in the gallery which is sitting on a blanket.

good luck, now I want to do a puppy cake.

Wow, thanks for all the GREAT ideas! I ended up not covering the board with red, simply because the board was so massive. I made the puppy cake with a 10 inch cake, baked the highest cakes I've ever been able to make and so I had to run out and get a bigger cake board today.

After carving and crumb coating and piping out all the 'fur' AND making a second trip to the store for more black food coloring... my entire afternoon and evening was gone. With two small kiddies and bathtime, I didn't get back to the cake until a while ago. I ended up making a small tiny birthday cake with a cupcake and am placing the four candles in that. I made 3 dog bones and have the birthday greetings with the little boy's name on those. It's one of those cases where I feel like I want to do more, but I really think the customer will be pleased with it as is.

I'll post a picture tomorrow. Again, I love all the ideas.
