I was just wondering....I made a cake for my nephew's baptism this past Sat. I got the idea from an adorable one here at CC I want to upload my pic, but I"m wondering if thats okay to do since it wasn't my original idea. I see ppl all the time posting the same style cake pics, but do they say the name of the person they got the idea from? What do YOU do? I don't want to get all the credit for something that someone else came up with. Just wondering what the protocol is for this.
TIA |

I have taken many a cake ideas off this site and posted my pics afterwards. I tend to give credit to a specific person if it was just one person's idea .. if I took twenty cakes and incorporated something from each person I would just say that I got the idea from many people on this site .. this site is all about learning and sharing tips and experiences but it's also nice to give credit where credit is due |

I was wondering about this too. I'd done a shower cake for
a friend based on one she saw perusing the galleries here. I'm really
proud of how it turned out, but have been hesitant to post pics of
it since I borrowed the idea from a CC'r. Is it okay to post it, giving
credit to the person I borrowed the idea from? |

DEFINITELY give credit and post your photo. The gallery is there for inspiration to all of us. Just be certain to name the source of your inspiration. |

Yes, I agree. Always give credit to the original decorator. Even if it's several people, I still do. And I've done it quite a few times. Some people have used designs I've made and given me credit and I can tell you that it really makes ya feel good to know people like your work!

I've had several people contact me asking me for directions on how to make one of my cakes. I've given them help, sometimes a lot of help - including photos etc. and have asked them to send me a photo of it when they're done. Not one single time has the person done this. Maybe they never got round to making it, maybe it was a disaster - but it's rankled me every time so now I don't give out directions - it takes ages! I think if you do use someone else's design they would be flattered but please give them credit or it's a bit rude. |

Emma,
I REALLY appreciate answers to my questions (which I might add are not very forthcoming in MOST cases) I only joined this site in August this year and am STILL trying to come to terms with all the politics involved - I have always acknowledged help and assistance given and sent off a PM with my finished product (sometimes a little embarrassed by the comparison but what the heck!)
I understand your reluctance given the history BUT please consider sending a message to the person who has asked for help letting them know of your decision not to want to be of assistance. I have been left hanging on a lot of queries and often wondered WHY I had received no answer - Did they not want to help? Did they not see the message? Have I offended by asking for help? Don't they like the idea of sharing their ideas? I wish I knew WHY?
Anyway, love your cakes - please don't lump us all in the same basket - there are MANY of us that truly appreciate the time taken by more experienced decorators to answer our often monotonous line of questions.
I THANK YOU !! |

Every single person who PPMs me gets a reply - I don't leave anyone hanging. I do also give EVERY PPM question some answers and help - what I don't do is spend ages writing out instructions, sometimes with photos as well as it's been a thankless task so far. I think that's fair enough. I'm helping but not bending over backwards anymore. |

My emphasis was to say thank you for what you do - from my experience it has not been the NORM - I wish more people on here were like you. |

I do not think this is a problem as long as you credit the person that you got the design from and as long as you show the actual one you made.
Most likely they won't look exactly the same because there could be something different between the original and the copy. Just like different versions of a popular songs.. that's how I see it.. |

Personally I think it is fine to use cakes as inspiration or even copy them as long as you give credit. I agree with KimAZ, it feels great when someone likes your cake enough to be inspired by it. It just feels right to note in your description where the inspiration came from. |

I think its ok as long as you give credit where credit is due. I'v done it before, and I've had people use my designs as well, and it made me feel really good knowing someone liked my work enough to try it themselves. |

I also feel that if I borrow a design that I only saw one (or a few) fellow CC'er do then I will credit that person. I double check I have it saved or I'll spend all day trying to find it. If it's a popular design, then I feel pretty confidant that no one will take offense to it since most people will know it's common.
However, I also feel that the purpose of this site is for sharing and helping so if you fail to give credit it's not like we should blacklist you for doing so but it's definitely encouraged!
Emma, when I feel up to trying one of your cakes I will definitely PM you a pix. I admit, I'm a HUGE CC addict and am on here all day and love sharing my "on the road to improvement" cakes with anyone who bothers to look. |
