**Also posted in "How Do I" but thought I would post in 2 categories just in case.**
I'm making a cake for my friend's 33'rd b/day party. It's going to be all Packer's theme (his fav. team).
Anyway, I thought about doing a topsy turvy one since I've never done it before......thought it might be fun to try.
But the only round pan I have are 2 9in rounds and 1 6in round. Can I use those sizes together??? And if so, how can I do the Topsy Turvy cake. I read the tutorial, but it uses 3 sizes for 1 layer???
When I make a reg. 9in round I use 2 boxes of cake mix, 1 in each pan to make it extremely full and tall. Would I still do that or only use 1 mix and not make it as tall???
Thanks for ANY help you could give me. And anyone with some cool Packers decoration ideas would be great to hear as well! THANK YOU!!! |

You can do it with those two pans.
Bake 3 9in cakes and 3 6in cakes. Cut a cake board to about 4 1/2in and stack the 6in cakes. Then start carving down.
Stack your 9in cakes and carve down. I recommend following the tutorial on here. If done right the method is rock solid! |

Great, thanks for your help! I think I get the whole "carving down" method now......looked a few cakes and re-read the tutorial AGAIN, so we'll see how it goes.
Oh, is it necessary to put a center dowel rod in through BOTH cakes since it's only 2 layers??
Thanks for all your help, I've only done 1 stacked cake (in my photos) and it's sad to say the least compared to everyone else's on here.....but practice makes perfect right! Thanks again for everything! |

You're welcome!
I think I would go ahead and use a center dowel just to give it a bit more stability. Heck, it won't hurt anything to do it so why not. I use a sharp knife to carefully sharpen the dowel but I think some people use an electric pencil sharpener.
Have fun with it! Every cake I do I seem to learn something for the next one! Post a pic here too so I can see it when you get done! |

Here is a really nice tutorial on whimsical cakes! They show really nicely how to carve if you are having trouble. And like dodibug said you can use that same size pan and just make 3 layers! Hope this helps! |

Ok, sooooo.....I made my first (and maybe my last) topsy turvy cake! First, I want to say thanks to everyone for your help!!! No way I could have done it without ya
Anyway, it was ALOT more work than I thought it would be. It turned out ok, but compared to all the beautiful ones I see on here I was disappointed in it. But, I guess we're our own worst critics.
Everyone at the party loved it and it tasted great, plus the birthday "boy" (he's really 33) said it was the cake of his dreams....so I guess it was better than I thought.
I made all the decorations out of fondant. The bottom tier is choc and the top is white, all iced in wondercream icing. It wasn't exactly "topsy turvy" done correctly and I was SO SCARED it was going to fall but it held true till we cut it.
Ok, enough of my babbling. Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's help. Oh, in case the link doesn't work, there is a copy of it in my photos....obviously it's the Packer's Cake.
I'd love some constructive criticism if you have any.......it can only help

Wow! That's cool! You should be proud! I haven't even attempted one yet! I think everything on it looks great! I don't know what to tell you but, I know that once you do something the first time its definitely easier the second time around. Keep going! I think your little footballs on the top are also cool! Awesome job! |
