I am doing a wedding cake next month that has a bow on the top with tails going down the sides. of a 10" and 6" round cake. I have never worked with gumpaste, only Fondant. What is the difference between these and would one be better to use for this bow and tails?
I have made a few fondant loop bows. This would be a Loop bow like the gumpaste bow tutorial on CC. How far ahead of time would I need to do the bow out of either material? If I made the bow tails ahead of time, would they dry hard and not be able to be shaped down the sides of the cakes? Also, can this be refrigerated for a short time if the rest of the cake is buttercream?
Thank you for any input ahead of time.

Let me take a stab at answering.
I always make my bows from fondant because IMHO gumpaste dries too hard. If you're planning on shaping the tails to the cake the fondant needs to still be pliable which it wouldn't be if you make them in advance. How long it takes to dry depends on how much humidity there is where you live. I am in the northeast so in normal conditions I plan on at least 24 hours for drying. And finally, I've been told never to refrigerate fondant but I personally have never tried it.
Good luck!

You could make the actual loops ahead of time. Now even if you do it out of gumpaste. Most people use 50/50. But for the tails, you will have to do that at the time your making the cake because once they dry you wont be able to shape them to the cake.
And yes, you can refrigerate it a short time if the cake is buttercream. Ive never had a problem with it.

Thank you very much. I thought that it would be the case that I would have to do the loops at the time I am making the cake because they would dry hard. I guess maybe I may need to practice a little bit.
I am glad that it will be able to be refridgerated for a short time.
I live in Flordia so we have a high level of humidity.
When I make my loopy bows out of GP I take the cake pan of the size of the cake my bow will be sitting on and turn it upside down...then shape my tails on it. Also when I am ready to assemble my gumpaste bow I attach a small piece of wax paper to the top of the cake pan and assemble my bow on top of the pan so I know what dimension I need to make it. I add my tails that are in the loopy bow if I am using them and my curly q's.
This is how I do it....I found I had a harder time with fondant then I did with gp, but I like both mediums
