I have been making MMF ever since my Wilton classes when I discovered how disgusting Wilton's fondant tasted and smelled. I have never been completely satisfied with my MMF though. One batch will be fine and the next will not....too inconsistent on the results.

Recently, my local retailer started stocking Satin Ice. It was $16.99 for a 5 lb. bucket!!! I couldn't resist trying it though. I have read so much about it on this site.

Now, this leads to a very interesting "problem." I loved the taste of the satin ice and it was much easier to work with than MMF. But, when you consider $3.00 vs. $17.00....I have to decide is it really worth it.

I would like to hear from some of you who have converted from MMF to Satin Ice. Please tell me your thoughts on the quality of the product after using it long term.

Well, something else to figure in to the price of the mmf is your time, that is time to make and clean up. And can you really make 5lbs for $3. even if you figure your time at minimum wage so thats approximately $7/hour, it must take at least an hour to make and clean up that raises the price of mmf to $10, then of course you say you don't have consistant results which also raises your cost. So in the end the cost difference isn't as much as you may have thought.

Good luck. Personally i would rather buy premade fondant then make it.

Satin Ice is a great product, it's just extremely expensive compared to MMF. I've lately been using a 1/2 Satin Ice, 1/2 MMF combo by kneading the two together so I get the benefits of the Satin Ice, but I stretch it further by adding the MMF.

I just got some red Satin Ice for the 1st time for an upcoming wedding cake. I love the taste! It does taste better than my mmf. I just got some creme bouquet though and I'm going to go make a batch of mmf with it. We'll see how it tastes.

Mmf tastes way better with the creme bouquet! I'll have to try the 1/2 mmf and 1/2 satin ice.

If you use alot of fondant, buy Satin Ice in 20 lb buckets. You can find them for about 60 dollars a bucket if you look. Then its only about $3 a lb.

Don't forget making non-MMF fondant. I make the fondant recipe from the Confetti Cakes book, and found it a lot easier than MMF, and tasted better too. I think a lot of people see glycerine and gelatin and automatically think it's going to be hard and/or time consuming, I know I did, but it's really not. I will stick with Satin Ice when it comes to deep colors though, I always have problems with the fondant texture after adding that much color.

I just bought my first batch of Satin Ice and I like it waaay better than MMF! The only time MMF worked for me is when I did chocolate. I love the smell, taste, and texture of Satin Ice. I don't care how expensive it is! I HATE making fondant weather it's MMF or regular...Sooo Satin Ice for me all the way!

I have a question. I have never had Satin Ice before but I have made Michelle Foster's fondant recipe from this site. It does take a few trial and errors to get it right but I do llike the taste. So my question is how close in texture and taste are the two of them does anyone know? TIA

I've been watching this thread and am so glad you asked this question! I'm a satin ice fan, but have never made Michele Foster's fondant....and there are some RAVE reviews about it here. I hope someone shares their opinion on this comparison! Although I think the reason I purchase my fondant is because I HATE making it and cleaning up! Maybe I just answered my own question!

I have using Satin Ice for over two years now and love it... Satin Ice will keep fine as long as you keep it well covered (in the bag it comes in and the bucket)... Of course if you are like me and hide your bucket..... then of course I found it the next week when I really didn't need it! Either way I love Satin Ice and I haven't tried or used anything but that....I was told at my first class not to buy wilton and never did.... HTH

If its price then I guess , Satin ice is the answer.Into the oven sells 20lb for $49.99,that's less then $3 for pound. Not adding the shipping though.

I just received my very first order of Satin Ice in the mail, and was surprised to find that it tasted and felt exactly like my MMF fondant. I just use the basic recipe with mini-marshmallows, water, extracts and powdered sugar, then work it into a dough with shortening on my hands and counter. It literally tasted and felt exactly the same to me. I guess if I choose to buy it again, it will be solely for convenience, but the price and shipping costs were a little steep. Don't know if I'll do that again.

If cash is an issue, then just put in your favorite CD and get into "Fondant Making Mode." Make three or four batches in a row, wrap up and freeze. Then you're good to go. If you know you're going to use one color, dye it when you mix it up. I've done this a few different times, and it saves time and money!!

I have used both and I'm for Satin Ice all the way!! All of my cakes now are done w/ SI and it looks way better, and is ALOT easier to handle than MMF. That and the time and cleaning time for MMF is so not worth it. If it is cost you are worried about - bump your price up a bit on your cakes to make it worth it.

I am a recent satin ice convert. I was pretty satisfied with mmf, but I had my first wedding cake coming and I thought maybe it would take some of hte stress off to just buy it.

I think I will just be buying it from now on. I like that it is one less thing to make, no mess, the consistency is always right, easier to work with.

I also buy it from into the oven for 49.99. The shipping is very resonalbe and FAST!

I'll never use mmf again since trying Satin Ice.

MMF is a pain to make, it doesn't have any stretch or pliability and it looks so dry on the cake that I really, really dislike it.

I buy mine through intothe oven as well. They have sales from time to time, post discounts in their discussion forums and even email discount codes for being active on the forums. Their price is cheaper than anyone else I've found and the shipping on a 20lb bucket was just around $11 and I had other items in the order as well!

I charge extra for fondant, so in reality, I make more money when I use Satin Ice and it more than pays for itself.

I think the taste is completely different. I don't like marshmallow flavored anything and to me, satin ice just has a nice, generic sweet taste to it.
