I would like to do a chanel purse cake for a friend of mine. I have a few questions before attempting this endeavor.

1. Does it have to be done in fondant, or would buttercream work for the base part? I realize I would have to use fondant for the straps, I'm talking about the rest of the purse.

2. How do you do the quilted pattern on fondant? Do you do the pattern before placing the fondant on the cake, or after?

Thank you!

These are the ones I made. Didn't have any instructions, so I just winged it.
Brown one was BC
White one fondant. I quilted it with long bamboo skewers after the fondant was on the cake. Gumpaste accents.
If you use a crusting bc, I suppose you could do the quilting the same way after the bc has crusted a bit

it can be done in buttercream, just wait til it crusts and then use the skewers, or a press if you have the diamond pattern one. Cel sticks also work just fine. The press is the easiest becuase the spaces are already set up evenly for you. Definately do it AFTER you put the fondant on the cake if you are doing fondant. If you have any edible silver or gold lustre dust, then you can mix that with vodka or everclear to make the accents or links for the handles.
Also, if you aren't used to carving cakes, make sure you pick a good stiff cake, like one that's pound or has pudding in it that will stand up to it, and make marks to cut before you do it if you're not sure- it's easier to take it off than put it back on!
Good luck! Smile
