Can't help with the attaching the fondant question, as I only work with fondant covering (I'm in Australia - buttercream just hasn't caught on here!), but I CAN help with the wire question!
The best wire to use is the paper-coated florists' wire. It comes in different guages (thickness). The higher the guage number, the finer the wire. You should be able to get it at a sugar-craft supply shop or florist wholesaler.
That said, NEVER stick wire directly into a cake!! It is asking for trouble on many, many levels.
Depending on your arrangement, you can make a gumpaste plaque to sit on the cake, with a "blob" of fondant that you can stick your wires in, or you can attach (unwired0 flowers directly to the cake with royal icing.
If the arrangement is such that you need the wires to be in the cake for support, you need to stick a "posy pick" into the cake for the wires to sit in with no direct contact to the cake. I know that Wilton sell these, but I just use the tiny tubes that florists use for single roses and orchids. My lovely florist gets them in for me.
Hope that was helpful!
