Hello,

Does anybody from Virginia know the process to get legal?
Is it allowed to have a home bakery in the state? What are the requirements to certify a kitchen? What about taxes?

I don't know if it is too soon to think about this. I started taking cake decorating classes 4 months ago and people loved the cakes and I've been selling at least 1 cake a week. Small cakes of course.
Now I have a wedding cake order for september and this weekend a graduation cake for 100 people. So I am getting stressed, because I don't want to get in any trouble. All these are people that I know, but eventually somebody I don't know it's going to call me and I will panic....

I have been making some research online and this is what I got.... let me know if I am wrong...
I live in chesterfield county and I know that you have to get in touch with the commissioner of the revenue office to apply for a license, also I know that you have to contact the planning department and the courthouse for properly location of the bussines and your company name....
Regarding the kitchen.... do I have to contact the health department or the dept. of agriculture....
What about insurance....?

Can anyone give me some advice.... ?
Thanks.

By doing a SEARCH in the Business forum using VIRGINIA

I found this entry

I live in Culpeper and got "certified" in March. You can call Dept of Ag in Richmond (804) 786-3520 and they will send you a packet of info, containing minimum requirements. You are not suppose to sell any goods until you are inspected, which I found very easy.
Other than the obvious cleaning, make sure all light fixtures are covered, thermometers in freezer and frig, you'll need to get a water sample, diagram of processing and storage areas, recipes for everything your selling along with steps in doing so and no animals in the house. This isn't everything, but this is the basics. Hope this helps, btw where in Va are you?
Thanks Joanne
