If it weren't for you I wouldn't know baking and selling cakes in my home is illegal. I could be baking in my home in blissful ignorance. Instead I'm asking around at churches and resturaunts if I can rent their kitchen and then have them look at me like I'm a martian. It's so frustrating. It seem's the only option is to build an extension to my house which would cost who knows how many thousands of dollars and for what? to bake a few cakes a month? So darn you cakecentral and curses to the health department for making things so difficult and never being there when I call or not even bothering to return my phone calls. |

So you do what thousands of other home bakers do...pretend you know nothing and just keep baking! |

I would think it is best to kind of lay low and advertise by way of mouth and take cash only. Not sure how you would deal with contracts as it seems they would cause problems if you were being looked at.... I don't know.... a paper trail.... |

So true! I told someone I couldn't sell something to them until I was sure I didn't have to become licensed or that I had to have a seperate kitchen and their response "Well I don't care i want you to make it"
LOL I don't want to worry about doing it one time and getting fines.... it only takes once..... |

Thank you. I guess I was too harsh on cakecentral. Without it I wouldn't be anywhere near the level I am now. I was asking at places to rent kitchen space and I went to a caterer. She said their space was limited but asked me to leave a card. She practically had to pry it from my hands because my mind was thinking "No! she'll turn you in to the health department!" But what does she do? She goes and refers a bride to me, knowing full well I'm not liscensed. AGH! I'm trying to keep a low profile here. Maybe it would be good to get caught. At least then I'd get to talk to them. |

Do you think maybe we could get around the legal stuff if we just showed people a list of gifts(money) other people have given us to make a cake a certain way. That way we wouldn't really be selling just making cakes and giving them away. We can't help it if people want to be nice and give us something (money). Just call everything gifts. |
