My senior English students just finished a major, major project at school, and they did an awesome job!!!! They are so proud of what they were able to accomplish, and I'm such a proud teacher! I want to reward them, and I don't know if I should make cookies or cupcakes. I've never made the fancy cookies with the royal icing decorations, so I don't know how much time it takes to make and decorate them. I want my students to know that I valued what they did so much that I took the time to make them something. I have to make 100 of whatever I make. Transporting the "baked item" will also be an issue.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated! I don't want a baking catastrohe! |

Well 100 cookies would be much easier to transport than 100 cupcakes...

cookies are not so messy and overly "filling" and easier transport-but i have no cookie experience |

It really depends on how detailed a cookie you are planning on. I know some people that do very detailed cookies and it takes them 20 minutes a cookie. Yet I have done about 80 cookies in a few hours with simple decorations.

I was thinking about doing a plain white with either the school's letters or 07 for the graduation year in the school's colors. How long would it take for this to dry? Also, I was looking at the royal icing recipes. Is one better than some of the others? |

None of the schools in my area allow homemade treats. They have to be individually packaged & storebought. I'm sure you've checked, but just thought I'd throw it out there in case... |

My school won't allow it either- too many allergies out there- need to be able to read the labels. I teach elementary- and can't even do any math or science activities with food. Stinks!! |

I would want a cupcake. I prefer cookies over cupcakes by a mile, but without milk, I'd want a cupcake. HTH.

Cookies definitely. Cupcake are messy in the classroom. You might use RBC rather than royal icing. There was a discussion of embossed cookies in January that you might find interesting. http://forum.cakecentral.com/m.....c&&start=0 If your seniors are anything like mine were, they would be happy with a cut out cookie with buttercream frosting and '07 piped on the top. By the way congratulations on the senior project- it feels so good when an assignment works out. I hope you are blowing your horn in the front office about it. Drag your principal in to admire their work when you pass out the cookies. |

The project was a huge year long project, and the students just finished the final phase which was presenting an 8-10 minute speech in front of panel judges. The other senior English teachers and I had to schedule 190 seniors to present over two days. It took a lot from us too! Our administration and those who volunteered to serve on the panel have had nothing but praise for the students' hard work!
I told my kids today that I wanted to do something that showed how much I appreciated them, and one class said for me to make each of my senior classes a cake. So, that will be four different cakes to show them how much I appreciate them. That might be easier than making cookies and cupcakes. Looks like I'll be baking this weekend and next week.
I mentioned that I wanted to bake something in front of my principal, and she just grinned. She even said that the students could wear jeans and their senior shirts that day too! |
