I have to make a water skier for the top of a cake. I was planning to use gumpaste/fondant. What is the best way to go about this. I'm afraid he won't stand up on the cake! |

damp some skewers and push into his feet. when dry, this will support him in the cake/ski |

I would take 2 wooden skewers and stick them into a cake dummy or a peice of foam a few inches, then mark them at the height of the "hips" and cut them off.
Then I would build the feet, legs and bottom area around the skewers( while they are still stuck in the foam).
Then build the torso and head seperatly and attach with fondant glue and a toothpick.
The skewers will keep him from falling over and then you can snip the bottoms off and attach him to the skies as his base.
You can keep a little bit of skewer at the bottom to stick into the skies for a more secure attachment.
They should (in theory) be long enough to balance his weight and keep him from toppeling over.
Of course I tend to just wing it and would probaly incounter quite a few problems along the way as I usually do but this is what my plan would be.

The way you did it is how I was going to reply to your post. That was the first way I thought of. As one who used to water ski, that was always the most memorable thing I remember, (water wedgies). |
