I am making my first ever attempt at a 3D cake which will be the USS Enterprise circa 1967-1971. Does anyone have an idea of how I can do the deck and still have it edible? It can't be very thick and must support itself where it hangs out past the carved cake hull. I do not have an airbrush and can't afford one right now so any ideas using it for color are out. I will have the ship sitting low in the water so the hull can be as wide as possible.

Also what would be best for the small parts of the tower, rails and planes. gum paste, fondant or marzipan? I was planning to use fondant over the hull and large parts of the tower. If I can find the right size I will use toy planes.

You can use rice crispy treats as the top. I use this when I need something fairly light and firm for a 3D cake.

if it must be edible probably make it out of 50/50 or straight gumpaste. When i made mine i covered a sheet of foamcore so i could get the deck made ahead of time. you can cover a RKT tower. find a plane mold and do them out of chocolate. i did the sailors manning the rails.

I just made a USS NIMITZ cake with an aircraft carrier deck.

I used fondant with a lot of tylose powder to make it hard. I let it sit over night and it was very firm the next night.

Here's the photo. (Please Note: It was a FREE cake so I didn't add as many details as I normally would for a paying customer! LOL)

I forgot to add that the ship base was carved out of rice cereal treats that I covered in fondant.

Thanks for the great ideas. This is for my son so I don't have to go into great detail. I can't imagine doing a cake for a paying customer Laughing

I am going to see if I can get the airplane molds this weekend. I love the idea of rice crispy treats as the base. The deck is still a toss up between the fondant with tylose powder and the rise crispy. What was the fondant and tylose ratio? Never heard of the tylose before and this is only my 4th cake. I was going to make MMF or should I use the stuff in a tub from Michael's?

Thanks for the picture. and to hear two of you already did a carrier made me feel so relieved.
