I had two entries last year and let me tell you, the day I had to breakdown my display it was thundering and lightening out. I had my eighty year old mother along with my two daughters (ages 3 and 5) and I really could of pulled my hair out at the end! I was stupid enough to wear sandles because over on my side of the bridge it was sunny and warm. Got there and had to walk and sink in mud. Was not pleasant!!!

It's in a horse arena with a leaky roof, no air conditioning, no room to work, no refrigeration, no paid expenses, no prize money...........I can't see the incentive here. Sounds like the only thing you get is to spend a lot of money for travel, food, and lodging to stress yourself out just to be on TV. You guys are such great decorators I think you could do better then this (like the other casting call that is going on). JMO

Yep. I agree.
I almost feel the same about the whole cake show. Atleast with the cake show though, you can see some cool cakes and the vendors are there, even if you dont win or enter anything. But I was a little ticked that the "big named" decorators were all on the DC show and are not going to the Maryland one. I really dont think that was fair. I would of loved to take some classes but the one's I wanted to take were in DC (and for a lot more money than usual).
Wow...thanks, everyone for the input. I don't think the stress & travel is worth it for me, at least, this time...but best of luck to everyone who can make it!

I had some dubious thoughts about this whole thing (in a previous note),
but now they are amplified! I have entered a national contest, and even in a good enviroment, things are tough. I can't imagine a televised show in this enviroment.
I am sorry, but I don't think this competition has been very well thought out by WE tv. It seems rushed....and cheap on their part.
Good luck and good thoughts though to the great competitors that participate!

I think WE is trying to get some of the viewers from FN that watch cake challenges. I dont think their Amazing Cakes went over very well and this is a way for them to try to get more viewers I guess.
But I really dont see it being a good situation. Last year there were so many wedding cake entries and things, there really wasnt room for a competition. That was why they had decided to split the show into two shows. But since you can enter both, I dont see how it was going to cut down on the amount of entries. Maybe for people in VA that didnt want to travel but thats all I can think of. But the people that I know that compete, come from OK,Michigan, Ohio, etc. and dont seem to mind the traveling. I already know of one of them that went to the DC one and is going to the MD one as well. So if they all do that, how is that suppose to help? Not to mention once the public finds out that there is going to be a televised competition, its going to be packed with people! Im sure its got to be a money thing.

If they're going to use only the one building again, and there's to be filming of a live challenge, classes, demos, etc., I don't know how there's going to be enough room either. Hopefully it won't be too cramped.

I know. The only thing I can think that they might do is use the old place where it was held for the challenge and the cake show in the arena. But I still dont see how they will be able to permit the public there during filming. I guess its either a wait and see thing or maybe one of the coordinators that are CC members can enlighten us!!!

Well, challenges be damned, say I. I was supposed to be opening my own bakery that weekend, and thanks to the zoning roadblocks we have hit, I'm now being delayed until June/July. So I suddenly have the first wekend in May free, so what the heck... maybe I'll get the shot... maybe not... but I'll have as much fun as I can doing it!
I also went to the show last year, and didn't really think it was that bad! Yeah, the DC show has a nicer venue now, but they did the best they could with the MD show... I doubt that they thought it would grow as much as it did in just a few years! If you look back in the galleries, it seems like the first year it was maybe 20 cakes... and then last year there were over 80 spots just for the wedding competition!! I too am worried about how they are going to fit it all in-- but maybe it's in a different building than it was last year?
Whatever it may be-- I'll be there!

They interviewed 20 people on Monday for the 3 spots to be "followed". They are only choosing about 12 teams instead of 20. They are supposed to let people know if they are in the competition on Thursday from what I've heard. The casting folks went to the producers with recommendations on last Friday.
They may not tell the 3 who they are until next week from what they told a friend of mine who was interviewed on Monday. Best of luck to everyone!

I would hope that they would have fixed the leaky roof issue before hosting another show, wouldn't you? Otherwise, why would anybody even enter it again? How can they think to not have a fridge/freezer? Is it a requirement that fondant is used?
They definitely do not seem to know what is involved with 'cakes' and I am SURE there will be a LOT of bloopers.
