I am attempting a Razorback cake for a friend of mine. I baked this morning and put my ckes in the freezer. Tomorrow evening I will fill, do any carving necessary and crumb coat, then Wednesday I decorate and Thursday we will eat!
Following is the basic shape I have so far and the cake I am really trying to duplicate. I don't think I have a lot of carving to do, but can you all please tell me what I need to do? Is the snout too long?
TIA! |

I don't think the snout is too long. I do think that you need to fill in from the face area down to the beginning of the snout. It needs more of a gradual decline. But you are definitely on the right track! The shape is great! Can't wait to see your results. |

Cakequeen - I think that's it! I knew there was something "off" about the snout, and the gradual slope from the face to the snout is it!
I originally had planned to have the snout pieces in the opposite direction, so that would have given the gradual slope, but then I thought I really needed the "flare" at the end.
So to build up near the face, should I use really stiff BC like I use for my dams, or would it be better to do a "spackle" with regular BC and some of my scraps?
Thanks! |

Post a pic with the two end cakes flipped around-- I think that might be just what it needs and then just a little sculpting.... |

I think the bsic shape looks great! The spackle would probably be a better choice than just buttercream. I can't wait to see the finished cake! |

I'll post pictures tomorrow once I thaw, fill and start playing with/sculpting this bad boy! I'm so excited that it turned out this well so far. I had a "plan B" cake designed just in case the baking of this one didn't go so well, but I'll file that away for another day. |

Well, here's my iced and smoothed hog cake - pretty darn close to the original, I think! I can't wait to finish him tomorrow and see the look on my friend's face on Thursday when she sees him! She doesn't even know I'm coming over there (she's about an hour away), let alone with a Rzorback cake.
I had baked and extra of each of the 2 ramekins pictured above, so I was able to to use the other "big ramekin" with the wide side toward the face to help with the shape. I owuld carve more off the back side if I was doing it over again, but I'm not doing it on this one! I'll post pictures when I'm finished as well. |

OK, here he is. I am thrilled with how he turned out. I nixed the "horns" on the top of the snout in the original picture because, well, Razorbacks don't have horns! Of course, I didn't figure out whay it looked strange until AFTER I already had them on and then had to take them off... But anyway, I'm thrilled with how well he turned out - especially for my first carved cake. |
