Mine was a while ago I got an email from a bride. She told me they had been to like 3 weddings in the past month and none of the cakes were good and she could not wait until she got to have her wedding cake because my cakes are the best she's ever had. I delivered the cake and the DJ had some and so did his wife and he ordered a cake for his wife's b-day.
Another compliment is when people tell me, "Ugh where were you when I got married?" |

For me there are two-one is when I took a cake to our church for a graduation party, and a lot of people actually lined up to take pictures!! Imagine that! (I'm known as the cake lady at church). But, it made my day to think that people felt that way.
The second was the following Sunday during his sermon, the pastor mentioned the 'awesome' orange cake I had made and how it was the best cake he had ever tasted. And several ladies came to me later and asked for recipe. (I used the one on here the wedding cake orange someone posted-Beth I think???) It's great! |

my was from a 2 year old....he was HUGELY into monster trucks, so of course they had a monster truck birthday party. he had one that was his favorite....a little hot wheels truck-named fireball. i've done several cakes for the family and his mom wanted to try her hand at cake decorating, so together we made the truck.
he walked in, his eyes lit up, and he said, 'that's my Fireball!'
i wanted to cry....i knew we had achieved our goal!

Not a comment but a reaction. My co-worker had a son and they were going to celebrate his birthday about a week after his birthday so no cake for him on his actual birthday. I told them he had to have cake on his birthday and made him a cupcake cake with Dorey and Nemo. When he say the cake, he started jumping up and down screaming, "it's my birthday, it's my birthday". He climbed on a chair to see the cake and wanted to eat it right away. They called later and said he wouldn't let anyone eat Dorey. She was FBCT. |

i do this as a hobby for family and friends, but i think what i love most, and what i look for most is the first expression on thier faces.when they walk in and see thier cake, i watch thier eyes and thier smile, that always makes me happy!! it also makes me feel good to hear my dh talking about my cakes to his friends. i'll walk by and over hear him on the phone raving about my cakes saying "you should have seen it, it was bad a$$!",and im thinking, it wasnt that great, but he loved it so thats what counts! |

for me it was the baby shower cake i made for my sis in law. I just decorate for family and friends right now. Well the head of the downtown business association here in chico,(also a long time friend of the familiy) was there and she just assumed that it came from our local downtown bakery. When she found out that I made it she really pushed me to get legal, and even gave me a lead on a kitchen i can use 2 blocks from my house.! |

Oh, this is the best thread! I loved reading everyone's stories--they brought tears to my eyes, but they were happy tears! Thanks to skichic68 for this idea...after the week I have had, it's been so nice to come here to read them!!
Thanks everyone for sharing the happiness. Isn't it funny how it's "just cake" so some people but it can bring so much joy and happiness to others? |

I am still very much a novice at this whole cake decorating thing but this complement came when I was truly a beginner! I always tend to dream big and bite off more then I can chew, this story is a great example of that. So the first two cakes that I ever made were for some neighbors that are dear friends of mine. I receive an invitation inviting me to there 25 wedding anniversary party, “Celebrating 25 Years of Wedded Bliss and Blisters” the invitation read. After thinking about what I could do for them as a gift I decided, get this that I was going to make them two cakes, one of which was going to be on pillars! So I call the daughter and tell her my intentions and not to get any other cakes! (What was I thinking?) Now mind you that this is coming from a girl that has never baked a cake let alone decorates them, never taken a class or anything. (So you ask am I crazy? The correct response to that would be, YES!) So here I go finding out everything I need to know about baking, decorating and stacking a cake. The time comes and I bake the cake with no problems. When it came to decorating I could have shot someone, not because the decorations were very elaborate but because I could not get the icing smooth! (Can Icing) (You see I am a bit OCD when it comes to things like this.) I finally give up and place the very bubbly chocolate bride and grooms on the side of the cake and pipe the words on to the other cake. The time comes for me to take the cake to the party and I kick the “bride and groom” out of the house. (Please don’t think I am a bad person, they just went outside and listened to the surprise band that there kids got them.) Set up was done and I brought them back in to see it. The “bride” cried and the “groom” tried to suffocate me to death he was hugging me so hard! Everyone at the party (aprox. 75 people) loved the cake and there were only a few pieces left over.
I was so happy that I had pleased them so much and that the whole thing was not a complete disaster that I deiced to make them more often, although I don’t make them as much as I would like to.
P.S. The cakes are in my photos. |

Not really a compliment, but my grad cap cake showed up on the Popular Graduation cakes this spring. I couldn't believe it was my cake right there on the home page. That made me so happy I had to call DH at work to tell him! |

When I was setting up a wedding cake yesterday, the groom was the only one at the reception hall besides me. I was almost finished with it when he walked in, stopped as soon as he saw it, and got out his phone. I was a little nervous because he didn't say anything....does he like it....maybe he thinks it is ugly...what's the deal? He took a picture and sent it to the bride because he thought it was "so beautiful" as he put it. She sent back a text that she loved it! That made me so happy. |

Hi guys... new day, new coffee!
I think this is one of the few threads I keep checking back on during the day. I love reading these stories and anecdotes! When I read how proud you all are of yourself, I'm proud of you too!
I actually just had a little something happen yesterday. A woman here in town has ordered a cake for her daughter's September birthday ~ Hannah Montana theme.
She loved my pics, and so without telling me, she told the party destination place about me, gave them my website addy and they want brochures and business cards to give to their customers when they book a party! She emailed me last night to tell me.
It certainly gave me a boost of confidence to know that not only my customer likes my work, but that a public party place likes it enough to advertise me to their clients!
(But, my son's SAHM comment is still the proudest moment that makes me misty when I think of it!) |

okay, wait! i just thought of another one....
i once baked a cake for a fella...and he took one bite and kissed me, right on the cheek!
he later wrote me a note that said 'the only thing sweeter than your cake is your cheek!'
his name? Alton Brown.
i felt SO validated.....i adore the man and his expression had me riding on clouds for months. it probably didn';t hurt that he was working....doing a book signing. he said he hadn't eaten all day and that my cake was going to be his breakfast and lunch.....
a very gracious man!

Were you commissioned for the cake or you just brought one? |
