I was terrified of doing this cake. Absolutely terrified from the first call! I have never sculpted like this before or made a cake this huge. It was for a welding business celebrating their 20th Anniversary. Thanks to Doug for posting a sketch of the cakes for me....

The black fondant was HELL. Anyone have any idea what happened? It is MMF, which I've made many many times. But it kept ripping, barely held together. It probably took 2 hours of kneading, combining it with normal gray MMF before I could get it on the cake. And it barely made it on there in one piece.

The customer absolutely loved it and said it was a huge huge hit, people couldnt believe it was cake. I just had to share because I was so scared of this thing and it was actually not that stressful once I started!!! Confidence boost 100% Yeha!

The black cake is a welders helmet. You cant see the top in this pic, but it has silver dust, to look like the glass.

Great cake!

As far as problems with the black fondant, it is probably because you have to add so much color to get a true black it changes the consistency of whatever medium you're working with. I've found for those really dark colors it's best to buy pre-colored fondant. It may not taste as good as homemade, but after you add all the color homemade isn't going to taste that great, either, and I don't think anybody is really going to want to eat black fondant anyway.

I agree with CakesByJen2 black is a nightmare to achieve then use and usually tastes gross. Your cake tho is fabulous - well done!

WOW that looks amazing GREAT JOB!!!!
On the black mmf I find that if I make chocolate mmf THEN add the black I get my color easier and faster and it still tastes good. Also if I'm needing alot of black I'll just add the dye to the melted marshmallows then finish making the mmf that way I don't spend hours kneading the color in... HTH
