I have to reply to what someone posted earlier about drawing a correlation between trans fats and cancer. Trans fats do not cause cancer. Eating too much trans fats causes cancer. Everything has been proven to "cause" cancer, including peanut butter, as many of us remember. However, it's not the thing itself, but a forced ingestion of too much of that thing that causes cancer.
And here's another thought: Can anyone think of ANY disease that has been "cured" since Jonas Salk came up with the smallpox vaccine? All this research, and all these drugs, and yet there is still no cure for heart disease, cancer, AIDS, etc. I'm learning that the cure for these conditions will not be a drug or a surgery, but will be moderating (not eliminating) the amount a person ingests of certain ingredients, reducing or eliminating all of the ungodly amounts of chemicals that are in nearly all brand-name foods, reducing or eliminating all the drugs we take that do nothing but treat symptoms and ignore the cause, and start making smart choices about what we put in and/or on our bodies.
There. That's my soapbox contribution. I just started eating all organic foods as much as possible, and plan to try making a cake with all organic ingredients. Has anyone done this and how did it turn out?
For those of you saying trans-fats have no health benefits and is man-made. What about splenda? In fact, it exposes the body to even more chlorine which could actually kill somebody in a much shorter time than trans-fats. In fact, splenda gives people stomach issues (politely put) immediately upon consumption. Trans-fats don't so why are you not complaining about that?
The only thign the government needs to do to step in and control the obesity issue is make healthy food cheaper than carb-loaded fat causing foods. The day I can buy enough apples to feed a family for a week for less money than boxes of macaroni and cheese is the day people will stop being fat.
Also the government pays people to stop farming. What's up with that!!! Talk about government intervention that is solely to pad somebody's pocket and not for the good of the people. They mess up our lives more than we do ourselves.

dandeliion...I agree with most of you but for me with aspartame, even in little doses it can kill me. I know alot of people who are becomming increasingly allergic to it. I am, I have anaphalaxis and for me aspartame is my allergy.
for everyone else....I am a firm believer in "what doesn't kill you will make you fat, and what doesn't make you fat will kill you" so 'eat drink and be merry, because you're gonna die anyway"
I know it is not a good philosophy but I look at it as...as long as it is labelled and you are aware of what you are doing could be harmful, then ultimately it is your choice!! all smokers know that smoking is harmful. I am glad that here in Canada, they didn't ban smoking alltogether, just where you smoke...you can't smoke within 9 meters of a building, you cannot smoke in a car that carries children, malls are no smoking and public attractions like "canada's wonderland" has designated smoking areas! It helps those who chose not to smoke or children who are unable to make that choice, not be exposed to second hand smoke.
with trans fat, if things are properly labelled, then people can make their own decisions. More money should go into educating people as to what is good and bad and thus give them the ability to make their own choices. what is causing the 'stink' here is the 'forcing' of the issue.
I am all for labeling. I had an issue with wrigleys gum....they do not clearly label their stick gum as having aspartame, and I nearly consumed it!! for starters, it was one of the few gums that was made with sugar and did not contain artificial sweeteners (the old fashioned stick variety) and now they are adding asparame to it with no clear 'NOW WITH..." on the label.
Let people make their own choices....that's the freedom that the US has touted for so long.....

I don't mind if most things don't have transfats in them, which aren't good for me, but I don't want people telling me I'm not allowed to eat them! I try to eat healthily but some things need things in them which aren't good for you. The example we're all familiar with is the Crisco one. I've tried crisco since it went "free" but it just doesn't work as well. And what about the fact that fat, any kind, will kill you too? It does a 100 things that are terrible for your body but we need it too. So will they start regulating how much fat we can eat? I hope not. As a grown up, I'd like to make my own decisions.

I'd like to add that driving a car can kill you, so we should all ride horses....oh wait - that can kill you too, cuz if you fall off the horse....
So we should all walk! Oh wait...we might get hit by those who choose to drive the car after all....
hummm.....what to do......
My point being, take care of yourself, yes. But too much sun can kill you just like too little sun can kill you. I've known of people who've gotten cancer who ate healthy. Sometimes it's a nutrition thing, sometimes it's not. Enjoy everyday to it's fullest, just like it was your last day on earth. It may not be the food item that kills you after all.
BTW - the "powers that be" (gov't wise) will ALWAYS use tactics to scare you into trusting them. It's up to us to choose whether or not we are going to let that fear control us.
Have a great day and ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the first one. Never thought about it that way. LOLOL
I guess I feel that the government should spend more time educating its citizens about trans fats rather than just flat out banning them. But that's just MHO.
If you have an otherwise healthy diet and excercise regularly, a slice of cake that uses trans fat once in a while isn't going to matter that much.
I can see it now...an underground Sweetex smuggling ring!
I hear what everyone is saying, but SERIOUSLY people, read about trans-fats. They should never have been made. They are chemically-engineered fats that our bodies don't know what to do with.
We would all be better if we stuck to lard, butter, palm, coconut oil or schmaltz (chicken fat renderings) for saturated fats, and all vegetable oils for non-saturated fats.
Here are some articles on trans-fats and what they are:
I'm glad to hear there are some hi-ratio shortenings out there without transfats!

My question is when are they going to ban the big farming corporations from saturating our produce and the soil where our food is grown with pesticides?
If you want to talk about cancer causing chemicals...it has def been proven that these pesticides cause breast cancer! So now we can add our fruits and salads to the list of cancer causing foods! The list of produce containing high amounts of chemicals is staggering...http://www.eartheasy.com/eat_p.....roduce.htm
...and we are urged to eat 5 servings of these per day. How much icing does one eat per day?

I think I feel slightly different about it here in Canada where health care is free for everyone. I would have no problem banning transfats but I would also push for no liquor, tobacco or pesticides too! And no hydrocarbons either - now if you ever wanted to see padding the pockets look at the big oil companies, the technology has existed to switch to cleaner fuels (and I'm not talking ethanol) for a long time! Oh and all those people who do crazy sports and ski in closed areas of the mountains and then need rescuing, why should I have to pay for your stupidity?
Sorry for the rant - anyway while I think that what you eat is your perogative at the same time its the hidden transfats that are killing people. Our society needs a change - just because your dry frying in transfat free oil does not make it healthy!

I'm sorry you have an allergy. I was just giving the example of aspartame b/c it did come out that they gave the mice massive quantities. Do we know how much they are giving them of the TF? They could be injecting them w/ 1000x's what someone would ingest in their lifetime. And if someone sat and ate TF & nothing else, yeah something bad will happen. Just like you sit and only eat strawberries for an extended period you'll 1) be making frequent visits to the bathroom 2) be depleting your body of other nutrients it needs. I too know people who ate organic & are staunch vegans & raised their dd's the same way. Both dd's ended up w/ cancer---so is it the food, is it our makeup, our location etc? What I would consider a healthy lifestyle didn't keep this family from getting cancer. (Thankfully both girls are in remission)

dandelion, I knew you were just giving an example, I was just making a point about my allergy in relation to labeling..please don't take it the wrong way, you are right in fact...
back to the original post, on that same page as the article there was a side bar with a very interesting article, good read. I would copy and paste it here but it's LONG... so I'll just post the link...maybe it will answer lots of questions...or incite new ones....
