Does anyone know where I can get boxes tall enough for a 3d cake?
I can find cake boxes at my supply shop but the lids come down too low for the cake that I need it for. | Try these guys
www.plasbox.com.au
you might find something |

Do you work from home or have a shop?
Have looked at your website and your cakes and they are awesome. |
Thanks. I work from home, the Hume Council is pretty awesome. Getting registered was quite easy and i only needed minor modifications to my kitchen.
cheers
Nati
PS I only do cakes part time. |

I havent found anywhere that sells really tall boxes for wedding cakes and such at a reasonable price, you can get some boxes that are around $20 each, but they're not designed for cakes, so you have to be crafty on how you use them. I buy all my boxes from AusPak, they've got really great stuff there. The tallest boxes are 6inches, i just use 2 or three of them for my wedding cakes, and make my own box, it's pretty easy to do so. Then they can be opened from the side like most other cake boxes, and you can slide your cake out onto the table without any problems.

Hi everyone,
I'm from Melbourne too! I have really only made a couple of cakes - for my daughter's birthdays but I really enjoy it. CC is a fantastic site full of help and inspiration!
It's getting to be quite a list! Yay for us! |

I have been thinking about contacting the city of whittlesea about getting registered. Nati, what's the starting point for getting registered? Do you just contact your local council??? |

Im from Melbourne too. I buy most of my ingredients from Cake Deco because I keep kosher and can find kosher-certified products there from the US>
I am just starting out but I love reading this board for ideas. I have been looking for a good cake decorating classes . I live in the Port Phillip area and as far as I could tell the closest one is in the Port Phillip arcade (almost underneath Cake Deco) in the city- all the others seemed to be in the outskirts of melbourne like chirnside which is an hour by car for me. It looked kind of messy and unprofessional. Are there any other classes in the city/port phillip areas? |

Your council is the place to start. If they allow home cake businesses then they will send you out information about getting registered. Dont get overwhelmed, there is a lot of papers, and a lot of stuff that makes it seem like it's all undoable. Speak to a health officer and they can tell you what you need to do.
The very first time i contacted the council about 5 years ago, the guy that answered was an absolute @$$ and told me "If you were able to have a business out of your home kitchen, then EVERYBODY would be doing it. NO you need to have a separate kitchen"
I was heart broken, but a couple of years later a lady in one of the yahoo groups that i belonged to, told me to contact them again, that she knew quite a few ppl that were registered in their home kitchens. So i tried again, and it seems the scum bag was gone, and i spoke to a lovely lady, that told me that the major thing i would need would be a separate fridge, but that a bar fridge would be fine, just so i could keep my eggs and butter separate. In the end, i didnt even need that. I had to have a hands free tap installed, some skirting (coving) and had to do some health and safety training (online). Paid the rego, and voila!!! Done. Now i have an inspection once a year, and i have to show some record that i need to keep re: deliveries and temperature control. It's really quite ok. Also you wouldtn want to tell them that you'll be popping out 30-40 cakes per week because they wont let you, as that kind of volume requires a commercial kitchen.

thanks Nati. It's just a thought at the moment, hoping to get to that level one day. My sister has dealth with the whittlesea council on a few issues and from what I hear, they can be major pains so it kinda scares me a bit!!!
But I need to get my skills to a level before I even think of taking a step like that.
Your cakes are gorgeous... you do amazing work. |

Oh Trudi,
I've just read the teenage daughter thing and since april you have won a prize for the boot and made quite a few of those cakes and omg you have done really well. Glad your son is getting into the navy and I just love the 60th birthday cake that you just whipped up and didn't like.. Love it.
I have a daughter who is 17 and boys 14,13 and 4. Totally empathise with the teen thing.
Anyhoo, chat soon
