What lovely cakes!
We had been planning on doing the Intimate Wedding at the Disneyland Hotel back when, but the Navy had other plans. We scrapped the idea after three failed dates. One day, driving home from work, we carpooled, he said, "let's get married this Saturday," and I heard myself saying, "okay." We ended up marrying on Sunday, the pastor was a camp on Saturday. We pulled together an informal ceremony and barbeque reception for 35 friends and family for a whopping $600! I made our cake, which was my first attempt at basketweave, and it shows...LOL. I also have to add that the cake IS leaning, someone put something under it, and it wasn't even...AND it was 105 degrees that day, 88 inside with the a/c full blast!
For our anniversary last year, we celebrated ten years of Happily Ever After with a dream Vow Renewal at Disneyworld and had the cake of our dreams made by the talented pastry chefs at the Grand Floridian bakery. It was sooooo good! DH thinks we should have another renewal for our 25th...oh, if we must!

I love all the cakes! It's like an "evolution" of cake fashion!
We will be 20 years this Sept 12th. Not only was I not into cakes but also was having a very informal wedding reception. So my matron of honor made a large sheet cake and she piped a Bible verse on the cake. It was a very long verse and now that I'm trying my hand at cake decorating, I have a much greater appreciation for the time it must have taken her to cover the whole sheet cake with writing!
hubby and i married 6 years ago, actually, 7-7-07 was our anniversary! we had to get our cake from the place our reception was held.... no outside cakes allowed. i had found a picture of a cupcake tower in a bridal magazine, so i took it to show the coordinator. it was perfect.... blue and purple flowers that would have matched our colors perfectly.
fast forward to the reception....
cupcake tower. check.
multiple cupcake flavors (yellow (dh's favorite), chocolate, vanilla and one other, can't remember) check.
even the 6" cake on top was covered in pink flowers.
as it turned out, the only taste we got was the one we fed each other. we did take cupcakes on our honeymoon (virginia beach), but they got left in the car...... ick.
a year later, we tried the top tier that was kept for our anniversary.... one bite and YUCK!!!!!! it was nasty! i do have a few pics of it and from a distance it doesn't look bad... but up close it was soooo not what i wanted.
Thanks we got it from a local baker http://www.michellescakes.net/ She did a beautiful job and it was so yummy that the leftovers my parents brought home were gone shortly after the reception- some of my relatives went to their home nearby after the reception to spend more time with them and they finished it off.
We also wanted a cake topper that we could enjoy after our wedding. The doves are now in our china cabinet- along with the gumpaste flowers that were on the cake!
We brought our top tier on the cruise with us- it lived in the refrigerator until that wednesday when we finished it off. It was that good- we ate it instead of the desserts on the cruise!!!

Hubby and I just celebrated 16 years. I am trying to remember what the cake looked like...at the time, I SO didn't care that when my MIL offered to buy it, I told her YES, and that her taste is excellent so just surprise me! But that it had to have at least one layer with raspberry in it.
It was three tiers, white buttercream, with BC flowers in our wedding colors. I think it was a flower topper...I KNOW it wasn't people. It was pretty. Most of all, it was YUMMY. I didn't get much at the wedding...we saved the top tier, but unfortunately didn't preserve it well, b.c when we defrosted it one year later it tasted like shrimp. So I hauled my butt to the bakery and ordered an 8" to eat. And it was YUM-O!
Honestly, at the time I was just so excited to marry my honey (high school sweethearts-we had just turned 21) that nothing else mattered. Silly girl...LOL!

My MIL and GMIL insisted on making the cake and since I didn't know any better, I said yes. Plus it was free.
It was 17 yrs ago.... what I remember is 3 square tiers, separated by little shot glasses. The roses were supposed to match or compliment the bridesmaids dresses, which was teal, but the roses were more of a navy/gray blue. Didn't really go.
The most memorable thing about the whole cake part of the wedding was that I completely forgot about having a knife to cut it with. So we used a plastic knife.

Wedding cakes are very special to me,I guess because we didn't have one, we eloped and I would do it all over again to marry the man that I have been married to for 30 years coming up in March.
I always give wedding cakes extra special attention and the girls at our church got their wedding cake as my gift to them, whatever they wanted.
It was really special to me when I got to do our daughters wedding cake she had 7 bridesmaids and I told everyone of them their wedding cake would be a thank you from me for being part of her wedding, so far 4 of them have gotten married and I have taken cakes to Michigan, 2 to South Carolina and Georgia.
I may not have had a wedding cake but I have the most wonderful husband on the planet!

When I got married 6 years ago I wasn't really into cakes, so when my mother (who always made our birthday cakes - but no wedding cakes) offered to make it, I thought - Yah! Free cake! She made a three tiered caked, bottom 2 tiers stacked then the top on pillars. All covered in cornelli lace (she says because she couldn't get the icing completely smooth) and with silk daisies between the second and top tier and a cherub topper with daisies. It was a dummy cake so she could make it ahead of time, and I thought it was fine - I really didn't care at the time. NOW I wish I put more thought into it and got something a little more elegant or something fun - but that's only because now I am addicted to cakes!

I wanted to post a reply with a pic of my cake, as it is what actually started me on decorating. I loved how my cake looked and wanted to try making cakes (Haven't ever attempted a cake like it though)
It was 4 tiers, smallest cake was on the bottom, largest cake was on the top, with a dowel through centre. I had fruit cake, chocolate mud, orange&almond and gin and lemon. The only problem with this was it tasted so great, some guests wanted 4 pieces of cake and there was nothing left to take home (can you imagine asking for 4 pieces of cake????)

Bejewelled, that is one of the most unique, classy, and beautiful cakes I've ever seen! What an engineering feat; how did they transport something so top-heavy??
Gorgeous!

okay first of all bejewelled...that is just amazing. My jaw was hanging open for like three minutes while my mind kept saying, "That is not a cake, there is no way that is a cake. It must be a center piece cause that can not be a cake!" Just amazing. I see why you wanted to get in to decorating yourself.
At the time I belived my cake was the most beautiful cake in the world. Hey, I'd never been to a wedding so what did I have to compare it too.
It was three layers, on pillers with fresh flowers in between them. White chocolate ganache and white chocolate roses. I thought they were super cool...hey chocolate roses!
The flavors were white with raspberry, white with lemon and white chocolate cake with raspberry filling on the top. It cost us $75 from a french baker in Santa Barbara.
Our topper was actually a model motorcycle that my husband had put together himself, painted white and hung little cans down the back of it. What can I say it was the only thing about the wedding he seemed interested in so I let him have his way. He gives me greif about it now..."what was I thinking letting him pick the topper!"
We married for less than $1000 and have been going strong for 20 years coming up on August 29.
We ate our topper on the honeymoon too. Yummy stuff!!
Every time we pulled over for any reason, I got out of the truck and joined my dh at the ice chest in the back. We kept our forks right next to the cake By Wednesday it was all gone.

Incognito, I love that cake! I wish I could have had something like that, but I did my own, so I did as simple as possible.
I got it from a Wilton Yearbook, since I don't have much experience with cakes, or any cake that didn't come from a yearbook, for that matter (I'm working on that, though). I added a few of my own touches. Like the scrolls, and flowers, and changed up the colors.
All buttercream, no special fillings, just different flavor cakes (strawberry, chocolate, and white). I didn't get the bottom level on top, but *shrug* no one noticed. I didn't even notice until it was too late to fix it.
Thanks for looking,
Holly
p.s. Please ignore the background, the silly photographer forgot to put the backdrop behind it.. heh Yeah, it's like that in his professional photos too.
**edit** Just wanted to say bejewelled, that is GORGEOUS! I've never seen one like that before now.

Not sure how they transpotred it (thankfully I didn't have to watch). Th cake cost $1160 in 2000. But thats NZD$ and today we are 68UScents to one NZ dollar, but in 2000 we were 50cents to the US dollar, so it would have been $580 (I can remember the exchange rate, as we went to New York & Fiji for our honeymoon.

Well if it tastes as good as it looks, it was worth every penny.. NZD to USD is about 71 cents now, if I read it right. So, a little over 800 now? I think. (I suck at math now, I hate being old. ) I don't know how many it serves, but I think it was well worth 800, just from the way it looks alone!!, not to mention the roses on top. I can't believe someone actually asked for four pieces though.. That's too funny.
At our wedding we had tons of leftovers. My mother took all the leftovers to the health care facility that was taking care of my uncle. I'm glad he was able to enjoy it. I hated the idea of him being stuck with only hospital type food before he died, and he and all the other patients were thrilled to have it.
It made all the hours of work even more worth it.
I might have to try to do one something like yours one of these years. I'm sure it won't be any time soon, though.. heh I can only make buttercream roses so far.. haha And tomorrow will only be my third attempt at fondant.
