What is the absolute best fondant that money can buy? I've used the Wilton in class...gross. I'm made MMF and RBC...fair. I am making my daughter a 3 tier Sweet 16 cake. I don't care for fondant and neither does she, but she wants it covered in fondant so that I can make some "awesome" designs. I want a fondant that everyone will rave about. What do you suggest?

the best i've tasted is choco-pan it has a wonderful chocolate flavor, it is softer then regular fondant making it a little harder to work with but soooo worth the effort

Fondx gets my vote for the taste, SatinIce for the workability.

Has anyone here tried adding a bit of flavouring to fondant? Maybe a dab of vanilla o something would make it taste better?

I buy the fondant from DecoPac (pre-flavored vanilla), and I have tried Orange, Mint, Banana, Cinnamon and Cherry. All of those met with flying colors in a taste test I did with neighbors and friends.

Edited to add: DecoPac came in a close second to Satin Ice, but the price is so much better, at least for me ($13 for 5lb and only $27 for s&h no matter how many pounds I buy).

Where do you buy it that shipping and handling is only $27 no matter what?

I buy Pettinice from Pfeil & Holing, very fast and resonable shipping - although I am in MA and they ship from NY, so that helps.

I recommend making MMF and adding your own flavor it it. My kids normally hate fondant - and I've never really cared for it myself... UNTIL I made a batch of MMF and added a little citric acid and tangerine oil to it. It was wonderful!

I picked at it all night. Just kept going back downstairs to take another bite. I haven't used it for a cake or anything, and between my kids and I picking at it, it's almost gone.

Try adding your own flavor, I think you'll be pleased.

Here is a thread to try some free samples from cocoa outlet:

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-287163-.html

I got mine in about a week or so after requesting. The white chocolate was my favorite!!

..no idea of the cost though, I never looked at that part icon_wink.gif

I have only used SatinIce...tastes great....and I LOVE the workability. If you see my cakes...I only use fondant and a lot of it! It covers cakes so beautifully. I buy it by the 20 lb. bucket. I currently have 5 of them in my kitchen! Maybe I should contact them to use me as an ad!

I have to sy, however, that besides MMF (too time consuming for me), the only other fondant I have tried was ((((gag)))) Wilton. The only thing that might improve the flavor of that garbage is a can of gasoline.

I'm a huge Satin Ice fan too. We have a distributor here in Houston so I can run across town and buy it with no shipping costs. I picked up another 80 pounds on Friday. LOL

MMF is okay, but too much work (IMO).

I love Fondx for both workability and taste. I found Satin Ice to have an aftertaste to it and it seemed much sweeter than fondx. I just used some Sweet Inspiration white chocolate raspberry fondant. It is delish but very soft. I had to work some cornstarch into it to stop it from tearing. I think it's a great flavor for a wedding cake but harder to work with.

I love Fondx and Satin Ice. Fondx is cheaper. I wait until I go to the ICES convention and I order my Satin Ice because when you buy it ther the offer free shipping.

Unfortunately in AK I don't have many options to purchase here in town. One place wanted $85 for a 20lb tub of Satin Ice. So I go through this site:

http://www.decopac.com/

You need to fill out the application, just give them your SS# for the Federal ID number. It is $13 for 5lb (that's the only size), but no matter how many tubs I get, the s&h is only $27 for up here, so it is worth it to me.

Do you happen to remember how much it costs to order it directly from them at ICES? I just paid $107 per 40 pounds. It went up from my last order, when it was $94 for 40 pounds. icon_sad.gif I buy it from a distributor, so surely they mark it up some, but thank God, not as much as the local cake shops, where it's $70 per 20 lb pail, and $27 per 5 lb pail!

Thanks so much for all the responses. I have a lot of taste tests to conduct this month. I am so excited about this cake. I have to calm down, because I have too many design ideas floating around in my head.

I'll suggest one more- I love the Jello Fondant recipe. I made some minor modifications to the recipe when I made it, and it took me 2 tries to get it right (I didn't let the Jello dissolve completely, so it didn't stick together at the end), but I loved the flavor. I did it in peach and I caught myself and my husband snitching pieces of the fondant for a sweet treat every now and then. I've gone out and bought several more flavors of jello to try next time...

I just got in my first order from Pfiel and Holding. I ordered 20 lbs and fondx and 5 of the Satin Ice. I had gotten the samples from the Cocoa Outlet, and while I liked the taste of the chocolate fondants (especially the raspberry one) I found that they were harder to work with and thought it'd be hard to cover a cake with them, since it seemed they wanted to crack when I rolled them. They also sent me a sample of fondx, which I liked, taste and workability. So that's what I ordered, but had heard good about satin ice, so got a smaller bucket of it to try. The Fondx is cheaper, and I made animals, a bow, and flower petals with it last night, and was really impressed with it. When I added gumtex, it got hard QUICK! My bow dried in no time. I'm going to cover a tiered cake today and do one tier in fondx and one in satin ice to see if I can see a difference or if I prefer one to the other. I'm so excited to find this, because I have been using nasty wilton forever now. I tried and failed at making a workable MMF. So if this works, I'll be so happy to offer an edible fondant cake!
