I'm in the process of looking for a commercial kitchen to rent. Can anyone tell me how they began their process?

At first I started with the classifieds. There were some building spaces to rent but not sure how to strike up conversation with owners.

Not knowing anything about this, I would probably cold call them and just come right out with what you are looking for. Anybody else?

I am not sure about your regulatins there but if all you need is a kitchen to make your cakes. Here they will let you use your local church kitchen if it can be certified. Just an idea to save some money and all . Or if you can have any thing on your property here one person took a mobile home a converted into a kitchen he said in the long run it was cheaper and he was closr to home.

You can also convert a storage type shed - I have several catering businesses in them that I inspect.

Talk to some of your caterers in the area. I have heard that some of them can not afford their own kitchens, so they rent them. I just found out there is one in my area. Nice to know!!

Good luck!!

Tonyah,
How big are these storage type sheds that you have inspected? That is something that maybe down the road I can do once my business was to expand.

AgentCakeBaker,
I started by making a list of churches and small restaurants that were not open for all 3 meals of the day. I made a list of questions, so I could get the same info from everyone, and then just started calling. A few of the questions I asked were, Do you have an approved/inspected kitchen and do you rent it out? What hours would the kitchen be available? Is there a refrigerator w/a lock? (I've heard stories on here of people 'sampling' at church kitchens!) Do you require me to have my own insurance policy? (for the building, not the food) What are the rates to use the kitchen? Are you open to bartering for time? I'm sure there were others, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
Good Luck!
Beth
